Sorry, my post magically got sent before I had finished - let me continue-------- I realized that the starter gear does not necessarily line up with the flywheel gear depending where the flywheel stops. What does align the two gears when the solenoid pushes the starter gear into the flywheel?
OK, I suppose the answer is obvious!

Deb,
The gears on the starter are tapered to prevent too much gnashing of teeth. There isn't any adjustment to compensate. While you are in there I would rotate the flywheel gear 120 degrees from its original location. On my 928 euro AT the engine always stopped at the same location which caused excessive wear.

Too late, I've now rotated the engine several times to get access to the clamps on the drive shaft and have no record of where it was originally positioned. Thanks for the tip.
