Lightbulb Trans. Selector indicator inop

Need some advice before dwelling into repair...

My gear indicator lights on the dash are inop, and my tach only works when the gear selector is in D1. When I move the gear selector for the trans out of D1, the tach drops out.

Any suggestions would be appreciated on both problems.

Like the new look of the site....

Does this change when you wiggle the dash pod? I'm not an expert in this, but it sounds like you could have some kind of electrical contact problem. Hopefully someone will be able to give you better directions on this.

No, it does not unfortunately. Tried that one. The lights went out the same time my tach dropped out the first time. The lights went out when I put the gear selector in D.

Ah, the joys of digging into the dash, console, engine.... Well, removed the pod, the console, cleaning contacts, replacing lights, pcb on pod, checking fuse/relay contact points, vac checking a/c circuit.

Found 2 electrical connections loose 1 behind the pod 1 in the console, gear indicators back on, tach works. Found vac line was disconnected from main vac line near booster, a/c works better. Still vac checking ciruit... Will be cleaning the blower vanes, and evap coil!

Found two vac leaks in engine compartment. The 'Mityvac' came to the rescue. This tool is my best friend right now! <img src="graemlins/bigok.gif" border="0" alt="[thumbsup]" />

Wanted to say thanks to everyone with the advice, and suggestions. The previous posts helped as well.

Talking

I really want to thank Erik-Denmark, Steve Cattaneo, Wally, Randy, DR, Nicole, Rob and everyone else I have talked to in the last 6 months or so on my inop tach and gear selector indicator lights fiasco.

I finally tackled this minor problem. Believe me, I have been busy with more than my fair share of projects.

Today Rob and I finally traced out the wiring schematics for the Tach and gear selector.

Then I removed my pod, and checked the tach for signal. The problem was the tach PCB has an interruption in the ground ciruit somewhere. I tried grounding the tach at the grounding stud, nothing. I replaced the tach (Greatful I have a few spare parts left from the donor shark still ) and wallah, it works. The tach and gear indicator lights work in the tach. Now I just have to adjust the gear switch at the trans.

I know it took me along time to finish my repair, but I wanted to let the board know the outcome of my repair.

Thanks again.

The Archives thank you for documenting 'closure' on this John.

Glad you tracked it down.
