Post OEM Hood Liner?

Any leads on a reasonably priced OEM hood liner?

Seeing how nice it looked on Thom Ross's car prompted me to do mine soon.

I like the look of the original foam type much better than the various aftermarket 'space blanket' types I've seen on ebay and other places.

Any suggestions are appreciated.

Randy,

You can get the hood liner at 928international for under $70 if memory serves me right.

Randy-

Although 928 International sells the item you seek, keep in mind that it is a 'bulk' item, and will require trimming.

928 Specialists sells a pre-cut hood liner that slips in rather easily - with no fuss or muss with triming. Be forewarned though - it can be a real PITA to do.

For info -

p/n 928 556 285 02 - cost = $$97.03 + shipping.

Randy,

I talked to Dave Roberts at 928 Specialists about replacement hood liners since mine was shedding foam all over the place.

I was leaning towards the "baked potato wrapper" hood shield for the car over the stock one. Dave told me that the stock foam pad was easy to install, had a adhesive backing and did not fall down like some of the bulkier aftermarket ones. We also discussed how the new one may shed like the old one did, but it took almost 15 years for the old one to start shedding and the new one could also live a long life. Plus, the baked potato shield is just plain ugly. I bought the stock foam replacement fron Dave and it really looks nice.

If you decide to go the baked potato route, you may be intrested to know that there is one guy selling the foil shield on ebay for over $100.00. I did some web searching and found the same shield from the same manufacturer available for $49

It pays to compare

P.S. other ebay overpriced items:

928 seat ****
Ebay- $9 Big three- $2-$3

928 hood and deck shocks (Aftermarket)
ebay- 36.99/pr. 928 Specialists $20/pr.

The list could go on forever.

HTH

Jay,

My 928 Specialists stock liner was easy to install. I covered the engine compartment with plactic sheeting, used a very dull walpaper scraper to peel the old foam off in strips without hurting the hood. It was not necessary to get every speck of old glue the hood. I lined up the pad and noticed that it is tapered to only fit in one direction and could be slightly tucked behind the suports on the edges. I got my 11 year old daughter to help, we peeled 1/2 of the backing from the new sheiled and placed the sheild at the top of hood and smoothed our way down, removing the backing as we went. A little tuck in the corners, a bit of working the pad flush against the hood, and it looks great. If it ever begins to fall, a spray of 3M adhesive should tack it back up, but it looks like it's there to stay.

I got my liner at 928intl and actually it only needed 1/2 inch off the top end so i could push it under the lip easier.

Best way i have found to get the old stuff off is...
Lay an old sheet on top of the engine bay, grab your shop vac and just draw it across the old stuff. It will flake and crumble away then is sucked into the vac. Very little mess. I then cleaned up the good part of the remaning glue with some acetone (i think). I ended up with lots of the old glue left on there but the key was it was a pretty smooth uniform surface. I marked my hinges...took the hood off..placed it on the ground (blanket underneath) and installed the new piece. Just apply the adhesive a foot at a time to the hood. I used the 3m stuff. You dont want to spray the whole hood then accidently miss align the foam! It would be a good idea to just take the hood of first actually.

One the best cosmetic things i did for my engine compartment!

Thanks guys. I guess I'm having a hard time justifying $70-100 for 50 cents worth of foam material.

Is this stuff designed for the space shuttle, or what?

...also
Having used the "foil" type stuff i would recommend staying away from it. Just buy the OEM material, it looks great! The whole objecive of the foam liner is NOISE suppression..NOT HEAT. While the Silver foil stuff may help with noise it also tends to insulate! You dont want to keep all that heat under your hood!

To add to Tony's last comment: I have been told that with the baked potato style material, you are more likely to have the intake manifold finish peel off.

Randy: If that high tech German engineered original hood foam costs $100 and lasts 15 years, it would cost you only 1.8727 cents per day - a small price for not having to look at that ugly old peeling foam, isn't it?

I probably sound like a mattress sales person.

The universal underhood pad from CMWAuto is fiberglas, not foam rubber.

Still don't understand why so costly. I mean, common, it's foam rubber for gawd's sake! (using my best Tom Leykis voice).

Do these kits include the small piece for the forward area?

Hmmm-

My "forward area" doesn't have any liner. The section that's forward of the seal at the top of the radiator sheet includes the vacuum diagram and smog equipment listing.

Do the earlier cars have the liner on this section? There's isn't much heat to protect the paint from, and not much sound from up there that needs isolation.

If time wasn't a concern, I'd be looking at my local auto upholstery shops for a similar foam product that I could cut to fit and glue on with some spray contact cement. Otherwise I'll be calling for the original stuff.

Anybody had any luck cleaning the original? I use a sponge and car wash water to get the big dust off, but it could still use a better cleaning once in a while. Thoughts?

Thanks!

Dr. Bob,

(very) gentle compressed air and a trigger-duster attachment?
