Default Radar Detector, '91 S4

Hello 928's, I picked up my '91, S4 (Metallic blue, A/T, champaigne leather, GT wheels)last night. It drives nicely although the suspension seems a little harsh when I drive over expansion strips and the like. It has a built in front and rear Radar Detector - how does this operate? On the binnacle just behind the steering wheel are located three lights, left to right; green, red, red: the red lights seem to have something to do with the Radar - 'also noted is a weak detection/horn sound when driving past strip malls. HELP!! before I start getting speeding tickets - this is Kansas after all.

Why not ask the manufacturer? What brand is it?

No there never were any factory options for such things.

Sounds like it may have been installed well if you would think that...

Pictures are worth a thousand words - unless those words happen to be a manufactiurer & model number....

Post up pics, or take a few minutes and run by a Best Buy (Or similar electronic store that installs radios etc.) and have them take a look at it...

Once you find out what brand and model you are dealing with, you will surely be able to find a ton of information about it on the net.

BTW,

Congrats on the new addition to the family!!!

Where in Kansas? If you are around KC, give me a shout and maybe we can get together!

My happiest experience with the K-40 that came in my car was when I took a knife to the wires and removed it from the car. After using an original Escort and now a Valentine-1, I found the partircular model of K-40 in my car completely useless.

I second the Valentine 1 as an excellent Radar / Laser detector. I have one for my car(s) and one also resides in my wife's car. Best $400 I have spent based on the mileage I drive for my job.

+10

I have one hard-wired into my 930, and it has saved my a$$ countless times. My vote is definitely for the V1.

The permanent install K40's were expensive - but it may be old enough to be basicaly obsolete... your call - see how well it actually works.

Money for money the new high end detectors valentine, passport are probably a good deal better for performance & value - but you already have yours and a K40 is usually a more stealthy install than any of those (remote detectors - possibly front & back...)
