Question Porsche radio symbols

Anyone understand radio symbols?
I have a Reno, 7 644 890 070, and a CR-1, 964.645.014.00, both have pre-amp sockets and speaker connections. There is a larger plug with two large flags, power and ground. In the CR-1, three small flags, one for a power antenna, one for an anti-theft switch, and another for "permanent voltage (term 30)". In the Reno, there are only two small flags, one marked "permanent voltage (term 30)", and the other one has a symbol that looks like a switch, with a "+" symbol beside it. What is this for?
The Reno no longer plays any music. Took the plastic part off the back, and it looks like some power got to the antenna cable, because the plastic where the cable coils back is well melted!
Can the CR-1 be made to work in the Reno's place? How does one reconnect the antenna?

Brett,

More than likely it is the power antenna or remote amp power-on actuation lead. I do not have the model sitting in front of me, but a radio is (basically) a radio.

You may have to fab up a connector or two, but they are both DIN radios and (I recall) they are both made by Blaupunkt. I have a friend with a spare CR-1 in his basement, I 'll look at next time I'm there.

Before you do anything though, be 100% sure that the power antenna / antenna amp (trying to remember what MY you have and it's not in this window) has not shorted out sending voltage back to your head unit, causing the problem in the first place. This is unlikely of course, but you don't want to fry another head unit. I would wager that your Reno is toast, I think I may have one around here somewhere, or a friend who does. Let me know.

HTH,

Greg

Greg,
The CR-1 has "Made In Japan" on it, no sign of Blaupunkt anywhere. I started to probe the Blaupunkt with an ohmmeter, and something weird to me seems to have occured. Many pins or sockets seem to have direct contact to the "+" hot lead with either the **** turned on or off! Inside the pastic cover on the back, the blue wire seems to have no contact anywhere.
As the CR-1 is the only one that has that power antenna flag, and my 928 has no power antenna, I'm confused by your question about a shorted power antenna conection?
If we could cross check ohm readings, maybe I might be certain the Reno is toast? I think it is, unfortunatly. A plug in replacement might be better than rewiring the CR-1, although I'd prefer a CD player....

Brett,

Your 87 has an antenna amplifier to help boost the signal picked up by the windshield antenna. This amplifier is a powered device, and according to the wiring diagram for your MY, is powered by the head unit. So, if the amp were to have a meltdown (of sorts) it could be feeding voltage back to the head unit. Once again, this is not the likely scenario - but I have seen similar failures in other stereos with the same basic layout.

The one issue with the CR-1 fitment will be powering the antenna amp, but I think there's a simple work-around for it.

It does sound like the Reno is toast (though looking at it just with the VOM, you can get 0 ohms sometimes where you least expect it on a car stereo). I looked through my pile and found a Monterey and a Lexington, but no Reno - afraid I have no test unit to compare to yours.

I plan to see my friend tomorrow and check out the plugs on the CR-1 he has. Though it might have been made almost anywhere (welcome to global commerce and all that) pretty sure it's a Blaupunkt unit - though it might be Alpine (former Honda OEM), or Pioneer (former Alfa OEM). Blaupunkt, and its parent company Bosch, manufacture stuff all over the world.

I'll also see if he has a Reno lying around.

You can buy the antenna cable ends at Radio Shack, and just cut off the burned section of the wire. But, I strongly recommend you determine there is no fault in the antenna amp before hooking up another head unit.

Greg
