temperature gauge needle jumping around

temperature gauge needle jumping around
When I started having problems with the now replaced water pump, I notice that the temperature gauge was jumping around. If I hit a bumpm, the needle would jump down and back up to normal operating temperature. Other times it would just shake/vibate a little and then go back to normal operating temperature. Now some times after warming up the engine for what should bring it up to the first mark on the temperature gauge it will not move at all until I start moving the car. Then it will jump right up to either the first mark or to normal operativng temperature.
Once the car is running the needle stays at normal operating temperatures about 95% of the time. when the shaking/vibrating occurs every once in a while, this onlys last for less than ten seconds and the needle returns to normal operating temp. When there is a sudden bump on the road, the needle jumps around again that only last for less then ten seconds before returniing to normal.
Thanks for you input.

Loose or broken wire,
I believe there are two temp sensors one controls fan(s). I could be wrong here but that one should be on the return side of the rad.
I'd look around the area you were working in for the (primary) sensor/sending unit.
check the Greg Nichols site for the skinny on this one.
I think Jay (?) responded to this last year so check the archives.
