Wink More electrical glitches...film at 11

Cruising down to the car wash for a quick rinse and the third weekly hand wax when Pattycakes tried out a new light in the pod...
First the ! and brake pressure warning -an old friend- WENT OUT! A couple of minutes later the little red light at the bottom end of the volt meter sweep range, dimly flickered. About a minute after that the meter dropped to under ten and the light remained lit.
When I shut down at the car wash - hell, I was already there, right?- the light remained ON!
I had to disconnect the battery before hand washing and waxing.
Finished the clean-up/primping, checked the battery fluid level and connections -all OK-,
Broke out the ever present multi-meter, battery with no load at 12.84 which seemed reasonable.
Got home light still on ,running under 10 volts, disconnected and now charging battery.
Waiting for daylight to check Batt. with load, and alt output -crap, it's only a couple of months old-, will check chassis/alt grounds again as well.
What I'm curious about other than cause, of course, is why the light would stay on after shut down and key removal?
Hope this is an easy one as tomorrow was to be devoted to power windows -drivers dragging and slow, and the sun roof also dragging and slow.
Any suggestions other than suicide will be considered.
TIA

John,
I have consulted the oracle, thrown the bones, and examined the entrails of a chicken.
All has become clear! <img border="0" alt="[jumper]" title="" src="graemlins/jumper.gif" />
You are cursed by the ghost of THE PRINCE OF DARKNESS. Yes, none other than SIR HENRY LUCAS himself! <img border="0" alt="[nono]" title="" src="graemlins/nono.gif" /> <img border="0" alt="[crying]" title="" src="graemlins/crying.gif" />
You must burn a virgin wiring harness, while blindfolded, while drinking a warm beer, after being stranded on a deserted road at midnight. <img border="0" alt="[ouch]" title="" src="graemlins/c.gif" />

John,

Try pulling the battery wire from the alternator to see if the light goes out. If it does, the alternator has an internal short.

Ernest,

Glad you said virgin "wiring harness" considering where John lives.

Ern,
Yea tho' I stumble
thru the Valley of shorted wires
I shall fear no electrons...
for they are lost, too!
Addendum;
Tried to reach the light switch to do the often suggested wire wiggle finger dance.
Not with these mitts!
I did notice the temp/vent switch on the A/C Control Head was very loose. Point of fact, it fell off when I was detailing the console with a small -"lipstick" twist-out- pencil brush I don't think the fiber optic light gets involved here. (thanks Brendan, that item on the phone call makes sense now). In any, case there should be no electrical issue there, at least back to the Photon Exciter/Emitter Unit (bulb) or PEU.
Fuses are all good, Battery trickle charged for 13 hours, no visibly charred wires, or di-electric grease dribbling out of any relays.
I'm going to attack the window motor and sunroof issue today as planned.
Going to hook-up the battery after a cold Brewski-I've been doing MANLY DEEDS in the yard. I deserve several!
OT
Anyone out there figure what they have spent on lawn, trees, shrubs, and plants, fertilizer, ect over the years? I figure I could buy another house not counting the H2O expenditure.
Dennis,
On it, thanks as usual-I'll let you know-.
Hey now,
It's Wyoming and Montana:
where ships are built of wood,
and men are built of steel.
Need I add that they have a lot of nervous sheep up that way...

John,

I thought it was Texas where "men are men, women are women and sheep are leery". Not gonna mention why Texans wear tall boots.

Ut oh, sounds like an intermittent problem I have seen. Internal short in the alternator doesn't sound good. <img border="0" alt="[ouch]" title="" src="graemlins/c.gif" />

And here I was gonna guess the exciter resistor is playing a cruel joke.

<img border="0" alt="[offtopic]" title="" src="graemlins/offtopic.gif" /> On the subject of nervous sheep......

More sheep than people in Wyoming which makes for little suspense it is after all a sure thing.

Thumbs down

Dennis,
Looks like the alternator
Well at least I can remove and install it quickly now that I've done it 5 times this year and it is clean as a whistle -Sharon is still looking for a few missing handtowels-.
BTW
As anyone knows (and I'm not being defensive about Texas, mind you) it's goats around here.
We are are berift of the white fuzzy critters.
As to the boots, "it ain't me, honest!
My problem is that the best alt/starter rebuild joint had all the 928 business they could stomache a few years ago.
They could probably add a wealth of practical experience: shorts, magic doorlocks, funky alarms, fried brains. These guy's even have a set of pubs. They will test for me but refuse to work on a 928 or 944's for that matter. They are tired of paying for someone else's mistakes, mods, repairs in time-spark chasing, or $$$ for smoked parts on a car that arrived by flatbed.
I'll try Odessa on tuesday when I have my V.A, semi-annual, medical abuse.
Thanks again, but please refer all sheep Query's to Snow - I hear he taught one to play the piano.

John,

Have you given any thought to ah.... (all you purists turn you head) installing a Delco on Pattycakes? There was a thread on the 924 Turbo forum which would probably apply in this case. Of course, this modification would just be a temporary measure.

You taken to mind reading?
Lemme see...
cheaper, more durable -IMO-, available anywhere,
more amps - + 20 - 35amps -. Be great if I didn't have to fabricate a bracket.
As you said a temp fix only...ahem, and amen.
BTW
I've always wanted to visit the 944 Turbo site.
OT
Been looking for a car -Zack's going on 16,
Caddy DeVille, 96 or newer, airbags all around,
big - all his bud's are 6 feet tall or better.
Insurance less than a V8 stang/camaro.
Check out the 929 Mazda's on E bay as well, you'll flip! Caddy's semi cheap, and the are giving the 929's away!

John,

That was the "924" turbo site. Just looked up the thread and it's dated 12/29/2002. Also, the 924ORG tech section has details of the bracket and wiring change. Not sure if a new bracket would be required on the 928.

John, if your looking to keep Pattycake till your no longer able to drive (the next 5-10 years,LOL) you might want to start saving some $$ on new wire harnesses (if still avalible).

Do you know were Pattycake lived it's life or any of it's history? I hate to say it, but I have read most of your threads and I can't help but wonder if poor Pattycake had been water dammaged at one point.
