Post Headlight Problems

This is a strange problem. My headlights work fine when on low beam. When I flip to high beam the upper headlights turn off and the lower lights mounted in the front bumper come on. I know that the lower ones are supposed to come on but why do the upper ones completely go out? These headlights are not the H4's they are the standard sealed beams that are brand stinking new.

Also, are the dash illumination lights supposed to be on all the time or just when the headlights are turned on. Cause my dash illumination lights are on as soon as i turn the key.

Thanks for your help

In my 85, the dash lights are illuminated only when the parking or headlights are turned on, as is the case with every other car I have ever owned.

With respect to the high beams, when my high beams are activated, my fog lights turn off but the other lights in the bumper remain lit. The round headlights in your hood should not be turning off (I assume you know this).

Either you have a short somewhere or your wiring is messed up a bit.

It IS possible to have your fog lights (and parking lights) illuminated without having the main headlights turned on. At least under some state laws, new cars can't allow fog lights to be on without the headlamps on as well.

Hope this helps.

Curt, on my '79 the dash lights are also always illuminated, regardless of headlights on or off.

To clarify the headlight mystery - when you rotate the light switch to the first position, the front white bumper parking lights (and rear lights) are illuminated.

Turn the light switch to the second position the main headlights raise and the white bumper lights (and tail lights) remain illuminated.

With the hi-beam switch (the turn signal stalk at the rear position) in the low position, push in the fog light switch to illuminate the fog lights while the white bumper parking lights (and rear lights), and main headlights remain illuminated.

With the foglight switch still depressed, moving the hi beam switch to the forward position activates the main hi beams, turns off the fog lights, and the white bumper parking lights (and rear lights) remain illuminated.

I hope you found this to be illuminating .

Curtis,

Each headlight has its own circuit, its own ground and its own power for high and low beams. Since your low beams work we can rule out bad grounds and low beam fuses. Check your high beam fuses #24 and #25 or #26 and #27. If they’re good you can have a bad high low headlight rely, or maybe bad seal beams.

Good Luck,
Steve C.
