Post First Emissions Inspection

Wanted to pass along the excitement I had this morning trying to get my car inspected. Here in Collin County (North Dallas) we are now (as of last May) required to do emissions testing. So this morning I show up at a shop and the guy drives my car into the bay and as I'm working my way over the 2 guys asked me if the car is front or rear wheel drive!?! It went downhill from there. When he couldn't find any rear tow hooks for the straps he told me that the car was too difficult for them to test. Soooo, now I gotta try some other place. Where does everyone else hook the tie down straps. Maybe just hook them to the rear suspension and crank 'em down tight? What a PITA - its amazing what government can think of to waste everyone's time and money and "save" them from themselves.

Most 928s have tie-down loops attached to the bottom of the rear shocks.

I too live in the DFW area and just underwent the treadmill tests now required at a Quik Lube on East Meadowbrook Drive in Fort Worth. I'm happy to say my 84S passed with room to spare in all emissions categories. The tie down straps were connected to the rear suspension without much gritchin by the attendant. LOL

Took Sharky to Kwik Kar Lube & Tune 2960 Beltline in Irving for state inspection this afternoon. Passed with plenty of margin except low speed HC was close but still ok. The '78 Euro is exempt from emissions now. BTW - They didn't use any tie down during the dyno run. You can see the straps on the floor. I did not stand in front of the car!!

Hmmm???

I don't remember anyone using straps on my car either.
Ouuchh!! That could have been nasty if something decided to let go.

Hey Randy, don't sweat it. A lot of us have been going through the same thing for years....

You guys in Texas have it easy when it come to inspections.

Here in AZ, we have inspection stations specifically for registration.

Eqipment test = I.E Smog Pumps, cats, gas tank opening etc.

The the actual emissions test - no tie downs but wheel blocks - they put a huge fan in front of your car to prevent over heating. If it's a stick, you cannot drive it up - they have too. Even if it's an automatic, you can drive up but they make you stand in a little booth while a sweaty, buttcrack showing, toothless Bubba is doing the test run.

If you fail, the sh@t gets deeper. You MUST have a certified shop do the adjustments. You cannot do it yourself at home. There is a waiver that must be filled out on the back of the intial failed emissions test. They don't tell you this of course -

I took my F3 in for emissions, failed the idle. Went home adjusted the idle and returned. After waiting outside in sun, in the middle of summer, for about an hour, I finally made it in.

They looked at the intial test sheet, and waved me on without even a question. They said I cannot retest my bike because I didn't have the test sheet filled out by a certified shop. Boy was I pissed!. You would be too if you waited in the sun at 115 degrees for nothing.

After having a few choice words with the manager - I was asked to leave - Mutual feeling - so I went and forged the intial test sheet and went to another location and passed with no problems.

I do take partial blame for not reading the back of the sheet but c'mon - they should of at least said something about the certification.

The red tape is Bull and I mean BULL. They are making it so hard to make your car/bike pass. Iv even heard of people having the cars de-tuned just for emissions then re-tuning it afterwards. Sometimes it's the only way.

Another 2 cents ........
