It was not the torque tube on my 89. Nor was it the motor mounts ,,, and the problem was compounded by out of round tires, at least one. And the odd ball problem was that even though the CV joint boots were good, it turned out that they will still need repacking after 15 years and 70,000 miles. Add to that a throwout bearing that was barely riding with the pedal fully up. That will rattle your shifter.

Current car is as smooth as silk. A RMB would have solved the problem on the S4, if you know what I mean. Out of four 928s I have owned, only one had this type of problem. I never checked the engine or the flappy valve, but I did take care of the hoses - no leaks. Well tuned, new MAF.


Almost makes me crazy even today.
