After you get the boot loose at the bottom, where it goes into the console, pull straight up with steady pressure. There are no pins or anything holding it on, just a snug fit. It will slide off.

Reinstalling the shift **** calls for some caution!
The shift linkage has one rod running from the lever back to the transmission, and one rod running forward from the lever thru a rubber-mounted bushing (you can just see this bushing at the forward edge of the opening) to a cup that snaps onto a steel ball. The ball is solidly mounted to the torque tube housing.
If you push down too hard on the shift lever, or if you pound on it, you can pop the cup off of the ball. Replacement requires dropping the exhaust as a minimu (Porsche says to remove the transmission and torque tube!)
This cup sometimes pops off due to wear, and when it does, the shift lever simply flops around. You can get the transmission into third by holding the lever at both top and bottom, rotating to the proper angle, and pushing both top and bottom forward hard. (Third is low enough that you can get the car started, and high enough to drive at a reasonable speed.)
If you are far from home, you can drop the exhaust, pop the cup back on the ball, and put a big wire tie, a piece of rope, or anything else handy around the shift rod and the torque tube to hold it on until you can replace the cup.

The shift lever is basically a flat bar pressed into the **** with a tight friction fit. See this thread for details:

928 Shifter lever width?
Anyone know how wide the shifter lever is between these red arrows?
How wide is it between the red arrows on the shift lever above?
This Porsche shifter **** is 5/8'' wide between the red arrows.
It also has a nut that secures it onto a lever (blue arrows).
Will this 5/8'' wide shifter **** work on my 928?
Or is this the shift lever for a 928? If so, what is the width between the red arrows?

You’re showing two different shifters the first one that square is for a five speed. The second one that’s round is for an automatic your shift not won’t work on the automatic cause. You have to be able to have a push down feature which I don’t believe that ***** gonna have The other one. Usually there’s plastic inserts that come with a **** so it can be adapted to fit many different applications. However, the shift **** is also covered in Leather on a five speed, so you’ll lose that feature as well and then you’ll have a metal rod sticking up, unless you have some kind of boot fit fixed to the bottom of the shift **** .

Ah. Thanks. That distinct spells a lot.
The first rectangular is for a 5 speed. Thast what i have in this case - 1979 5 speed with a aftermarket short shifter and afternarket **** on it. .
For the 5 speed are you saying i need a push down feature?
To your comment, no, there is nothing inside the shifter **** but I looked at other wood ***** and I didn't notice a push down feature either?
On plastic inserts, I can do some homework as to your point i bet i'll be able to find some. but i'd like to do so only if i'm sure i'll be able to use the **** on my 1979 5 speed? Any insights / advice here?
Lastly, yes the **** is covered in leather. The current **** i'm trying to replace with this vintage porsche **** is to replace an aftermarket short shifter the prior owner put in so there is already a different boot and plastic ****.
Will i still have a metal rod sticking up if the current boot fits?
