By the same token, 8" S4 rims look weird on the front. They stick out too far. Steering gets twitchy, too.

If they rub a little, you can easily pull the lip out to clear with a pair of heavy gloves.
All the fenders are different - hand fitted. I've pulled out one of my fenders this way on the '81 with bolt on spacers and 8" S4s. My first 86.5 had spacers, and 8" S4 rims w/245 Kumhos fit with ~10mm clearance. I'm switching the rims over to my new 86.5, I expect they will fit fine.

Early cars had a big ol' gap, so they could be fitted with snow chains...as if.

Thanks Gretch, alloy nuts all round would be ideal.
I fitted S4 16"X8" Dish style rears with 245/45/16 tyres to the rear of the car with 15mm spacers. Gives a little less than 10mm each side clearance, no rubbing at any speed and the car looks much better.

AH ....."All the fenders are different - hand fitted " I disagree they were stamped on a press using a die there is very little differences in the cookies from the cookie cutter. The 928 was assembled on an assembly line with uniform parts any fender fits any car...same with doors, rear hatches, hoods , standard production line tolerances .

What I said. The panels are stamped by machine, but a person had to clamp them into a jig, and spotweld them. Then someone had to hand beat the panels , grind and fill, to fit them together smoothly. Fenders will bow out slightly different, side to side. I bet most doors will not just drop in and fit all around as well as the door it replaced.

Things you don't see, the lift pads, for example, have wide assembly tolerances, sometimes ~3mm difference, center to center, car to car, even side to side.

Bet again the body parts all fit just fine... some like to believe that the 928 was "hand made" but the reality is they passed down an assembly line and hand beating ??? there is very little fill in a 928 body. Just like Porsche engine parts Porsche body parts are made to a high standard for tolerances ...

There's a set of 7" front, 8" rear phonedials with MPSCs for sale on NASAForums for $800. Shipping would probably be a killer for you.

If you are going with retro-cool phone dials, pick up a set of magnesium 951 cup pd's. I think they came 9" with 70mm offset and weighed like 16lbs each. Not bad at all.

Nick,

I think the picture angle made the PD's look flat. The centers are very similar to stock. I need to get my suspension down like yours!

nice colour on your rims as well these old cars look fantasic when they are dropped, and they handle and stick to the road really well. i dont know if you actualy need the 9" rims, the biggest tyre you can get is a 245 in 16" - i think - and this fits on the 8". although i suppose the 9" rims would stretch the sidewall nicely. i wonder where i can find any of those??

just enquired with jasmine here in the uk and they have never seen the 9" rims come through so they must be rare. the 8" rims come with 52mm or 22mm offset - no good for the front.
