Default Sun Roof Drain

Today I took the left fender off the Euro to prep for paint. To remove the upper bolt the egg crate vacuum container has to be removed.

After I removed the fender I noticed the left front sun roof drain was crushed and sealed closed by the vacuum egg crate. The fender had never been off so the car came from the factory this way.

Those of you who are having sun roof drain problems - especially on the front left is it worth removing the vacuum container and checking the drain.

I clipped the end so the tube can now drain. Things you find out when tearing down one of these cars.

Thanks for the tip Dan. Mine leaks now and I suspect one of the drains. I thought the rear, but I'll check the front as well.

where exactly do the drains end in the fender well? I tried cleaning mine out with weed whack wire, and both front drains are clogged down towards the end, somewhere below. Looked in the WSM and can't find the end point in a diagram. Also, do you have to remove fenders to access the bottom end?

Try chucking the weed whacker wire in a drill and rotate it as you are pushing. That may loosen the blockage.

good suggestion. Altho I also heard that pushing up from the bottom is effective, I just don't know where the bottom is and how to access it. I don't want to remove fenders...

Agreed the factory did pinch the drains. Every car I've seen had rear drains filled with pitch also.

The rear drains are just on the corner of the hatch. There is a hole on eather side of the back of the roof for the rear drains. The tubes inside the sunroof connect to a the metal portion of the back of the roof.

The two front drains go down through the A pillars and exit just front of the windshield under the fenders. You will not be able to see them unless you take out some of the junk under the fenders on either side. On the driver's side there is the cruise control servo and the vacuum egg crate. That is after taking off the inner fender panel. Fortunately the egg crate and the ampilfier are only held on with one bolt each. The 88 up is a little different because Porsche went to a differnt cruise control servo.

On the passenger's side you will have to remove the large water bottle for th windshield and headlight washers. Getting the top hose off is the most fun on this job.

Once this extra baggage is removed you can look up toward the rear of the fender cavity and locate the tube from the sun roof.

If the sunroof tube is pinched by the egg crate as it was on my 83 Euro then I doubt if a little bit of weed wacker cord even connected to an electric drill will clear the tube. I ended up cutting the end of the tube off.

Looks like a factory defect to me. I am writing a letter to Porsche for an adjustment and asking enough to cover the cost of a new interior. The old one ahs to have been ruined by all the water leaking in the sunroof. I wonder it Porsche ever put a bulletin out on this one?
