Anybody here done the Fan Clutch to Electric Fan switch. I am looking to do so, and could use some opinions and tips.

Thanks

Cool

Check out www.flex-a-lite.com and look for the model #150 Black Magic fan. I am using one on my 86.5 and it is well worth it. It flows 2800 CFM which is enough even for the 928.

I replaced the air pump with the euro pulley system before I switched to the fan so I didn't need to worry about it. Does yours have the air pump? If you want to keep it, you will have to retain the fan pulley system.

Mine is set up to run off the aux. fan switch, which I replaced with the 75c one. It does come on when I come off the highway, but not when I am on the road above 30 mph unless the air is on.

It's worth a noticable amount of horsepower, the engine seems to rev a lot easier. Very worthwhile swap.

Good luck, Dave

Dave,
Tell us just how you fitted the fan please. Removed the shrouds at rear, or retained them? If removed, how did you set up the air intakes? Retained front original fan or not? New fan at front or rear of radiator?
Enquiring minds need to know, please.

Thanks, Dave

Black Magic is ordered. However, I will need to give some thought as to the euro pulley system. This is a new car for me, so I have to get familiar with this thing before I tear it apart. I appreciate the help.

Ok, here goes. You can mount the fan to the sides of the engine bay, but will need to manufacture mounting brackets. (It's much easier to do with the radiator out!) The fan fits well on the radiator and has a shroud of it's own. I retained the factory aux. fan in front of the condenser.

I modified the top of the old shroud to fit over the new one and retain the air inlet tubes. The new fan fits between the radiator and front of the engine, make sure you get a "puller".

Other than that, have fun. Feel free to ask any more questions if need be. Dave

Dave, by 'modified old top shroud' you mean you cut it up - just enough to fit, or just retained the top for the air tubes?
Did you remove the lower half also, or leave it in place?
You have the new one fitted hard on the core, but mounted on brackets to the side , or to the top.

Thanks,
jp

The fan is mounted to the sides of the engine bay. I removed the bottom shroud and the top is almost gone. The only part left is what bolts onto the radiator and holds the air inlet tubes.

Ketchmi,

Thanks for the help. I intend to keep the air pump, so i guess I just pull out the fan clutch and blade and leave the belt in place? What are the effects(drawbacks) of removing the air pump besides some part swapping? Thanks for the tip on mounting the fan.

I believe that you can remove the fan blade and keep the pulley. The clutch is part of the shaft and will need to be retained. With no blade, you should achieve the desired results.

The air pump needs to stay to be emission legal. When I removed mine, I noticed no difference in performance or anything else. It just helps the cats fire off earlier. If your car is not running clean, removing it can cause your cats to clog. (Then you have a real problem!)

Have fun!
