Default Weights of exhaust (and misc) components

A while ago Carl (928andRC51), Adam F., and I were playing musical exhausts on a couple of '87s. While we were there, Carl was interested in determining the weight differences between the various parts we had on hand. So, FYI, and to put into your personal stores of useful or useless 928 facts, below are the weights of various items as measured on a postal scale:
Code:
Pounds Item
26.6 S4-style rear muffler
23.2 90+ GT twin-outlet muffler
18.2 89GT (and I assume CS & SE) muffler
 8.6 RMB (928 International - SS I think)
21.0 Large Resonator (one of two)
14.0 Small Resonator (one of two)
27.0 Collapsible Spare
I realize now that we didn't weigh both sides of the mid-pipes/resonators. Since they are slightly different side-to-side, and I don't remember if we measured the same side for each set, the above resonator measurements are probably +/- a pound.

So the "20lbs lighter" advertisement about RMB's is pretty close!

My new home-built 3" dual system is weighing in at 46lbs. Thats headers to exhaust tips.

I did not get the weight of the stuff I removed: cat, pipe, resonator and pumpkin muffler. Does anyone have these weights? I'd like to know my net gain or loss.

My custom dual 3" exhaust weighs 66 pounds, that includes the headers. It has 4 mufflers and a bypass valve that added 4 pounds by itself.

How did you get it so light? Are you sure your scales are correct?

Greg,

I was probably not clear....46lbs, did not include the headers. I only have one muffler per side, no resonators. Pictures are in this thread https://rennlist.com/forums/928-forum/376915-x-pipe-for-headers.html

Your weight sounds about right. My MSDS headers were pretty light.

Just found this old thread that had the weights of the S4 and later exhaust components.

The weight has a direct relationship to how much sound is deadened by each.

William Anast and I were just talking about this last week, discussing how much lighter his new exhaust would be vs. the stock GTS pieces. Those big GTS resonators are tanks! Anyway, good to see that the stock weights already exist, I will try to remember to weigh Greg's new pieces soon.

I weighed the stock resonators of my GTS:
20 pounds (9 kgs) Small Resonator (one of two) GTS and S4 style
27 pounds (12 kgs) Large Resonator (one of two) GTS and S4 style

I swapped them for GT style resonators, but did not take weights. If anyone has them, please add. They seemed lighter. Part nrs are: 928 111 093 03 and 928 111 094 02

Anyone knows what version resonator was meant by :
21.0 Large Resonator (one of two)
14.0 Small Resonator (one of two)

Regards

Thought I might as well throw this in there:

1979 - 1984 cast 'lima beans' manifolds: 10kg per side (!)

1986.5 / S3 'shorty header' manifolds (look the same as S4+): 3kg per side.

Weighed em on my bathroom scales.

Had the digital scale out this morning.

S4/GT/GTS exhaust manifold: 8 lbs 12.5 oz
Factory catatlytic converter: 22 lbs 8 oz

So using these, Dave C's and Theo's #'s (arbitrarily):

S4 big resonator exhaust : 2x8.75 + 22.5 + 2x27 + 26.6 = 120.6 lbs

S4 small resonator exhaust: 2x8.75 + 22.5 + 2x20 + 26.6 = 106.6 lbs

'89 GT/SE/CS exhaust: 2x8.75 + 22.5 + 2 x14 (or 20?) + 18.2 = 86.2 or 98.2 lbs

90-91 GT exhaust: 2x8.75 + 22.5 + 2 x14 (or 20?) + 23.2 = 91.2 or 103.2 lbs

GTS exhaust: 2x8.75 + 22.5 + 2x27 + 23.2 = 117.2 lbs

*These numbers are inexact because all the different flavors of resonator are different weights.* Even for the 'GT' sized resonators, there are at least 2 types that appear to be made from different metals which may weigh differently. Next time I'm at 928Intl I'll weigh some of the resonator sections and get more exact measurements.

Small is GT-style resonator. Large is not-GT-style (i.e. S4).

Dave you must be measuring the whole pipe not just the mufflers themselves? My weight of the GT style mufflers is around 6 pounds muffler alone. Good info, just needs qualifying.

How would one measure just the weight of the resonators? Saw off the pipes, weight the components, and then weld them back together?

EDIT: Ok, my bad. Greg is right. My use of only the word resonator is misleading. My original post refers to weights of components that are irreducible further only by "non-faster methods" (e.g. sawsall, etc.) Or, IOWs, pieces as supplied by the factory. Specifically, for 87+, the factory exhaust would (in my mind) consist of the following:
* manifolds (R & L)
* cat (entire welded-together assembly of two cats, a/p piping, etc.)
* resonator assemblies (R & L) (welded-together resonator and pipes on either end)
* muffler

Therefore six (primary) components.

Yep, that is what I did.
