Post Missing Steering Rack Plug

Doing some under car cleaning today in preparation for a tightness check of the base pan bolts, among other things. After removing a considerable amount of oil and greasy/gritty deposits, I was surprised to notice that the rack centering plug was missing! No doubt it has been missing for some time.

Quick check of PET indicates that this opening calls for a "Screw Plug AM 12x1.5". I also ran a quick search on the Rennlist 928 archives and found at least one note of a plastic plug in this hole.

Can someone verify whether there is a plug or bolt in the hole? Is this a standard type of thing or 928 specific? If possible, can someone verify the length of the bolt, as I may have to get/make a temporary replacement until I can locate the genuine article.

Also, given that this bolt/plug has been missing for some time, should I attempt to inject some grease or something into the rack cavity? I'm assuming there was some form of lubricant in there from the factory. I am also sure there is plenty of dirt in there now!

I'm planning a rack/engine mount replacement in the future - I suspect that my rack is leaky, as its the norm with 18 years and 90K miles on the vehicle. For now, however, I would like to monitor the situation and simply replace this missing bolt/plug. Any help appreciated.

The rack plug is a threaded plastic bolt, and the PET callout "Screw Plug AM 12x1.5" gives the thread size and pitch.

It is P/N 999.063.002.40, Steering - Rack - Centering Hole - PLUG, and we sell them for $0.94 - yep, a Genuine Porsche 928 part that costs less than a dollar! (Actually, there are several that do.)

Wally;
Thanks for the info...oh and that $0.94 US is about $1.40 Cdn...plus the shipping and taxes will bring it into the $20 range for me! So much for the under-$1 dream part idea.

Seriously, I'll add one to my small parts order list and find something to "plug" the hole in the meantime. Thanks for the info as always.

Ernest;
Yes, b'y, there are a few of dem German cars in St. John's these days...but only one 928 that I know of. You know what they say around here: worst thing you can have on your house is nar porch! I've met a few ex-Nflders thru this board...nice to keep in touch and develop a network around north america. Drop me an e-mail at steveco@nf.sympatico.ca and tell me how a St. John's young fella ended up in Texas!
