Default Converting a Canadian market car to US specs..

Hello everyone,
I have been lurking for a while but as you can see this is my first post.
It’s been my dream to own a 928 since my early teens. While my friends all lusted after Countach’s & Ferrari’s, I was the lone wolf who fell in love with the 928.
Does anyone remember the Kool cigarette contest where the grand prize was a 928? I probably mailed in about 100 entries written on 3”x5” cards under my brothers name (I wasn’t eligible to win because I was under 18) to try and win that contest.

Anyway, now that I am getting closer to buying a 928, I have a question regarding the 1987-95 models.
Currently there is a very nice 1991 S4 on eBay that is in Canada. This isn’t going to be the car for me because it’s an automatic but it is so nice that it made me wonder about what is involved in converting a Canadian market car to US specs. (I'm in Michigan) I understand that if the car has the U.S. EPA decal on the door jam, getting it over the border will be much easier. But my main question is about the gauge cluster. Is it fairly straight forward when it comes to swapping out the gauge cluster or is it going to be more involved than that?

Thanks,
Brent

Welcome Brent and happy hunting....there are some on this board that have been hunting for just the right car for quite sometime now. Anyway, do a thread search. Jim Baily of 928 International has written extensively about Canadian car to US spec conversions, and it sounds like something to avoid. Good luck!

Also note that MANY Euro spec cars ( of all types) are being imported often from Japan since they exempt cars over 15 years old from meeting all the normal Canadian (USA) specs. So just because it is in Canada does not mean it is a Canadian spec car.

Jim, that is a good point. My 86 is a Japanese car and it has both features of USA/CAN specs mixed with Euro ...an example is the EURO Fenders and markers with a U.S spec engine as well incorporates a Euro type VIN ....but left hand drive(North American)...the spedometer is in both KMs and MPH.......Bill

Thanks for the tip, I searched but didn't find my answer. But now that I included Jim's name as the poster...bingo.

Looks like I have quite a bit of homework to do before I think about buying any car that is in Canada.

FWIW, this is the car that peaked my interest:
eBay item number: 270176286305

Brent,

I think this one is a Japanese import. There is a lot of them coming to Canada. ( I know )

There a nice GTS in Quebec City. For what I know, it is USA specs.

Good luck

Any Euro import to Canada typically has 'ZZZ' as characters 3 through 6 in the VIN: while we can enjoy these particular vehicles, USEPA and DOT would have a s*#t hemmorage.
If you find a true Canadian spec car, it generally meets USEPA/DOT compliance except for the speedo in Km vs MPH; the wrinkle here is getting PCNA to commit in writing on their letterhead a 'Letter of Compliance'.

I did this once - chances of pulling this off again are about the same as having Miss America candidates coming good on their professed goal of achieving world peace ...
