Default My 82 Door panels were in need of some TLC

Firstly, I would like to thank everyone on this forum. This is my first time posting, so before I go any further, I wanted to get this thanks out of the way.

I bought a 1982 928 EURO version about 6 months ago, with 70,000 original km on it. The engine was in great condition, some of the electrics needed some work (and some still do), but the biggest problem with the car was the interior.

The PO told me that the car had sat in a porsche dealership in Japan for about 10 years untouched. This led to a lot of interior damage from the elements. Although it has a new paint job, the interior needed a huge amount of work.

When I finally took out the entire interior, I realized that there was a great deal amount of water damage to the bottom of the door panels (due to some missing rubber seals in the windows.)

I thought about fiberglass to rebuild, but it is difficult to work with and reshape how i wanted, so I finally came up with the idea of paper mache. Yes I said paper mache. It was extremely easy to work with (using brown paper bag material instead of newspaper).

Well, to my suprise, it worked, and worked well. I topped it off with a coat of fiberglass resin for water proofing and added strength.Cost was about $10 and a whole lot of work and it saved me probably 500 dollars in a new door panel.

I either cut or just reshaped the current pieces with some paper mache.
This worked very well for me, so if you have any minor cracks or rips in the fiberboard part of your door panel, I would recommend this method.

I am going to reconfigure the door to hold some new speakers with the same method, although I may use a bit more fiberglass for this too.

I will post pics when I get done.

Thanks all

Hope you've got those door seals all taken care of... yes post some pictures....

I guess originally they aren't much different from paper mache - more like wood fibre mache maybe but compressed to shape for sure...

Good thinking... I think...?

Welcome. BTW the doors should have a sheet of plastic glued or taped to the door frame before you re-install your new panel. The plastic is what protects your fiber board. I've seen this in other cars too.
