Hi Adam
Nice to hear you are so close. I actually live in Matawan.
I wish I was handy with the wrench's, as my mechanic guy just called and told me I have to replace all the spark plugs, dizzy caps and the spark plug wiring!!! I just love un-budgeted expense!! I guess the only way to budget with a 928 is your best guess x2!!
I am sure it will all be worth it when I finally get it back on Monday!

Mark,
Matawan. Cool. My dad used to work at the car dealership right there. It used to be Tom's Ford. My mother is from Matawan and I lived in Keyport when I was little. I know the area well.
For easy stuff like cap, rotors, plugs and wires, I would suggest saving the money and setting up a 'tech session'. Like Adam said, we're available for help if you need it, and if we can't figure it out, this forum is always open. There are people on here who have done pretty much everything.
I think I feel a tech session/GTG/fun run coming on to welcome the new locals. Anyone?

I just purchased from the original owner, a 1986 928 with 33K miles in near perfect condition. 5 speed, sunroof, Guards Red with black leather interior. Car was garaged since day 1 and is in now in my garage in NJ. Original owner is a good friend of mine who just didn't use the car but once or twice a year. Back problems made it tough for him. I will need to have car gone over by a trustworthy person who knows about these cars. I can probably do most of the work myself, but just don't want to ruin a great car by not having someone who really knows these cars go over it for me to make recommendations on maintenance without robbing me blind! I am in Matawan, NJ

Typo in my post. Car is a 5 Speed. My friend has the original purchase paperwork from when he bought the car back in 1986 and some receipts for services. I didn't see any receipt for the timing belt service, so that has me concerned. When I asked him about it, he had no idea about the car even having a timing belt or how critical it is to have it replaced. He is a guy with money, but no mechanical clue. I drove the car home about 90 miles from where he lives and the car ran great, but I was sweating it, hoping the belt didn't fail. It seems he had oil changes done and a few other things here and there, so not sure what should be done. It seems the big things are the fuel lines and timing belt/water pump.

Welcome to Rennlist.
I would take Stan's (Mrmerlin) offer in a hart beat.
He's one of the most knowledgable member here.
You're lucky to be near him.

Start a post with pics of your car. We all would love to see it.

Welcome new guys. Print out Dwayne's guide. But the first time I did a timing belt I had 3 guides from here.
"Search" and read. There was a thread recently on getting the belt over the various gears and the tensioner. Even with the adjustment bolt all the way back it is tricky.
Take pics of everything as you disassemble. Baggies and notes in the bag of bolts and parts as you disassemble. If you remove the wp, make a template of the bolts and which bolt goes in which hole. You should prob use new bolts, but it has 2 or 3 different length bolts. Makes it much easier to figure out.
Have ample amount of Liquid Wrench or make your own: 50% acetone, 50% ATF.

Thanks everyone for the warm welcome and good information. Looking forward to updating the maintenance on my car and getting it ready for some spring car shows and drives!
