Allow me to add one more piece of advice.

To build a brand new race car takes loads time and lots of money.

What ever type of car you decide to race, try to find a good one that is race ready.

In general see if you can find someone that is just burnt-out and wants to unload everything in a package deal (my fav. way to by).

Always remember to have fun and don't let it come before family!

This has been a great discussion. Thanks to all for sharing your experience and opinions. I think what I really want is to legally and safely drive my cars flat out on a road course for fun, not as a professional. The DFW928 group has been very helpful, suggesting I join the PCA Maverick Region and get connected with other owners who can teach me. Here is a place close to where I live that sounds like what I'm looking for-

Think I will drive down there and check it out.

Well Heck Steve, you just described PCA drivers ed Take that advice and join the club. The only thing your car needs to be for that is safe. You can have a blast for not a lot of money. DE was one BIG reason for my buying a Porsche period. It is the cheapest way to get track time that I know of. It also opens the door to other clubs that run track events. With a little PCA instruction, many groups will welcome your presence. I have been running 3-4 DE events a year plus 1 or 2 independant events. It is VERY addicitve. <img border="0" alt="[burnout]" title="" src="graemlins/burnout.gif" />

Steve,
If you go on a track and race then you might want to look into insurance. If you bang up you shark, your normal auto insurance normally won't cover the damage.
