8 speaker sound system....wheres the amp????
ok here's the lo-down. The owner prior to this stripped the car of its excellent quality blaupunkt speakers and old but extremely expensive Blaupunkt Reno head unit all for a sound system at a cheap price of 90 dollars...speakers included <img src="graemlins/oops.gif" border="0" alt="[oops]" />
I am right now trying to locate the amp for the car to see if the wires are bypassed in order for the stereo to work...which sounds unbelievably crappy. Can someone tell me where the factory amp is on these cars???? and if it's compatible with an aftermarket head unit? I'm gonna be putting in an Alpine next week. I already have the Infiniti speakers hooked up and ready to go...they just need a good head unit.

On my 86.5 model, my amp is below a panel between the passenger seat and the passenger door. The speaker fader for the system is on the panel next to the parking brake handle. My PO had put a JVC head in place of the stock radio. It is wired through the fader but I have not checked if it is run through the amp.

(I am not an expert, your results may very)
If you go with new quality stereo, it will probably have enough power that you will not need an amp. As Greg stated, the amp is located on floor between passenger seat and passenger's door under trunk release mechanism ****. The amp may or may not be compatible with a new stereo. Depends on year of your car.
Unless the PO has done it already, you will need to run wires from the new stereo to the amp's location to connect to all the speakers. When I installed a new Blaupunkt in my 1986 928S last fall, I purchased a custom wire harness to do this. Simply ran wire harness from stereo, under passenger's carpet, to amp's location. Disconnected amp, and then pluged wire harness into wires previouly exiting amp. Pretty easy to do. Let me know and I can locate and provide you name and number of company that provided custom wire harness.

Here is what I have done. I added an Alpine ( although I now like the Blua Toronto much better) and a Pioneer Amp. Pictures of the amp in the passenger tray and cover below. My next project is to connect a small amplified sub woofer to my current amp. Should meet my needs.

Greg:
I purchased my new Blaupunkt car stereo and custom 928 wire harness from:
SW Stereo Specialists

Took me about one hour to do whole job!! And I'm not very good at stuff like this. They advertise in the back of every Porsche Panorama magazine. They will match or beat any Blaupunkt or Becker advertised price.
Cannot say enough good things about SW Stereo. A technician there, who I believe was the owner, knew everything about my 1986 928. That the model of stereo changed half way through production year 1986. That he had a different harness for each version. That in my situation I could not use stock amplifier. Also, when I found two (2) power sources under my dash, I called him and he talked me though decision process on which one to hook up to.
One final thing. Here's a link that you might find helpful with your project.
