Fried my wiper motor!!!!
At least, I think I did. Nothing I did knowingly, I was working on the speedo trying to exorsize the deamons. Had the hood up and noticed a small bit of SMOKE! coming from the wiper motor. It was too hot to touch. I unplugged the electrical connector coming from the wiper motor and the smoke stopped and it's cooling off. Wipers were working fine last time I drove in the rain (months ago). Don't know if they work now or not, I suspect not.
My question is: Is it OK to drive the car with that connector unplugged? Everything SEEMS to be working fine (I even fixed the speedo) with it unplugged but I don't have my manuals with me to trace the circuit.
Also, I was looking at the motor trying tofigure out how I would go about replacing it. I assume you need to remove the hood but I still don't see how it comes out.
Thanks,
Kevin (..wishing I hadn't left my manuals in Talladega...)

I don't think you need to remove the hood to do this...you need to remove the cowl.
[That sounds way worse than it is!]
Remove your wipers and open the hood. There are two screws that need to be removed, if I remember right [I pulled mine apart one day and lubed everything- making a huge difference in how fast the wipers operated!]. Once the cowl is lifted away, the wiper mechanism simply unbolts. You'll fight with it for a few minutes to get it out of its place, but it comes right out in the end.

Thanks, I will check into that.
Today is not my day. My one of my main coolant hoses blew while the car was sitting there idleing. I though the thing was on fire, you know how anitfreeze and water look when sprayed on a hot engine.
Guess it's time to just replace all the rubber parts and be done with it....

kevin,
as normy said you can do this without removing the hood. i was able to get mione out without removing the cowl either.
if you end up needing a wiper motor i have one out of my 88 track car available.

Looks like I do need a wiper motor. I plugged it back in and it tried to turn but no go. Acts like it;s frozen. I beat on it with a mallet and it would move the wipers when I hit it but not by itself. Probably just time for a new one.
Let me knw how much you want for that one Tom.

Well, the old wiper motor came out without any problems. I took it apart as best I could. the gear box portion looks to be in good order, plenty of lubricant in there and the gears are not worn at all. Definately a problem with the electric motor portion, which I can't take apart right now.
I'm going to attempt to rebuild this one, I'll let you know how it turns out.

Found the problem with the motor. There is a ball at the end of the motor shaft that sits in bottom of the "cup". Inside the motor is a little retaining ring of sorts. Well, evidiently mine came loose and had the motor seized. It was pretty rusty in there so I cleaned it out best I could, put it all back together. It will be tomorrow before I can test it.
Anybody got any suggestions on what type of compound to use on the inside portion of the motor? I cleaned the sides of the casing with a wire brush, but not the magnets. Used rubbing alcohol on those as well as the winding. Anything better?
