Default Missing door part?

I'm helping a friend get his 81 on the road. The driver's door has a section missing that is not on my 83. I found a picture of it on a car on Ebay, but can't tell what it is. It looks like switches but we don't see any wires down in the air duct.

I posted before I finished explaining. It is upper section of the vents on the door.

seat memory switches I think.. I do not think they wre an option till about 89, maybe. On an 81 you are just missing the blank plate

As Shark Attack points out, these are the switches for the seat memory. Those were available from the 87 model year onwards.

It looks like your friend has converted his arm rests or the whole door panels to those of a much later model 928.

There should be a trim piece available - for those cars that did not have memory seat, or the UK models - that would eliminate the unnecessary switches. Probably a $5 part from your friendly Porsche parts supplier...

I would agree they don't look like my 81 panels. I think the separate speakers are a dead give away. I would much rather have the separate speaker panels. Jason

AFAIK the newer speakers don't fit into the older doors. I was told that in order to install these separate speakers you'd have to cut holes in your door's sheet metal, of get newer doors.

Someone correct me, if I'm wrong!

The 81 has all the original speakers and stuff. Just that missing piece like it had memory switches. It does a feature that moves the seats up when you tilt the seatback forward. My 83 doesn't have this that I can tell yet. I've only had it 3 weeks and I am finding and fixing electrical things left and right!!
