Talking Rear Muffler Bypass

I was looking at parts on 928 International today and I came across the rear muffler bypass for 150 bucks. Has anyone installed it on their 928 yet? If so, how does it sound? I got a clip of it and it doesn't sound too loud...which is good I'd like to get the RMB ASAP cuz sound is everything!

OR...

What happened if I removed all 3 mufflers on this car, welded 1 cherry bomb per each pipe on the car and piped it all the way to the rear???? Would it be super loud????

Cool

If your removed all the mufflers and added cherry bombs, the car would roar! A cheap route might be removing the rear muffler and replacing it with a turbo muffler from some muffler shop somewhere, just have them weld something up. Basically, this is what the Borla exhaust that 928 Int. sells. The Borla is just right- a bit loud but it doesn't make your head ring.

I like the sound of the stock muffler on my GT. I recently had it replaced and used a stock muffler from Porsche. It was more expensive but, well worth it to me.

Eurospec just about everyone out here has a RMB on their car. Some are louder than others you just never know until you put it on but they all sound nice under throttle. Nothing but compliments so far and the occasional stern look from Mr. Enhanced Revenue Service (cops).

If you were to remove all three mufflers I think the car would be too loud to say nothing of sullying it with the addition of cherry bombs. It's always good to have a speed/sound proportioned car.

Cool

I love my RMB! If I am going through a canyon, the stereo is off and the windows are down.

On that point, does anyone know if the Borla cat back for an 86.5 is true dual or single exhaust? I need to replace my rear mufflers and would like to try the Borla, but don't want to convert to a single pipe. TIA, Dave

Actually I'm looking for head ringing. That way if this car ever comes across a Camaro Z28 and he eats my rubber and dust i want his ears to be ringing. muhahaha! I think I'll choose those lil cherry bombs that are sold by Dynomax. They are the round Race Magnum series "mufflers" (muffler my ***...)

Kaz:

Just about everyone from MY 86.5 and on has them (it seems).

Prior to those model years, the RMB kits won't fit. Please tell me I'm wrong.

Dave, you're right don't worry BUT, I have a friend about 5 miles away from me that worked on a 1982 928 with the competition package. He bypassed the rear muffler and made his own RMB. All for only 50 bucks out of the owners pocket. Wowy what a deal!!!!

Dave,

I have an '81 with an RMB. I have the Borla s/st system and it sounded OK but I wanted a little more rumble. I took the rear muffler to a local muffler shop and they bent up a pipe in 10 miuntes and charged me $25. I hooked it up to try it and liked it. I added a chrome tip, universal hanger and now have a fuctional RMB for under $50.

After living with it for a while, I still like it but it is loud. It also adds some popping on decel and my wife knows I'm comming long before she can see me.

ES 944,
Due to time constraints plus exterior house make over I have not managed to fab up a set of duals for Pattycakes - 82' auto., Weissach.
However, did some experimenting...ended up with a 2 1/2", High flow shorty Cat. and the flat, shorty - 15" - Flowmaster with the flat "vette" tip. This is loud to the point I apologized to ALL of my neighbors beforehand. The cherry bombs are not a good choice but do have the advantage of nestling in the 'tunnel' nicely. Until I fab. up something with fewer decibles my Mustang, Firebird and Camaro hunting is on hold. Really!!! It's that LOUD!
Your car, your choice. Having been there I felt I should warn you.
Have fun just watch out for those LS 1, auto., Camaros and Birds they are awesome ... not 4,5L country.

If you want a fantastic Bwaaahhh sound from your shark that doesn't induce the kind of neighbor hatred headers will, do not hesitate to install an RMB.

1st, it is simple to install.

2nd, it's just as simple to remove and put the original muffler back on.

3rd, it should add a bit of HP boost due to a less restrictive flow. Absolutely one of the best values in aftermarket mods for late model sharks!

P.S. It's always helpful if you're asking about parts or mods that you post the model year of your shark so that folks can reply with info applicable to your shark.

Hey Dave, on the pre 86 cars or S models, a rear muffler bypass is no problem. It's just that instead of a bolt up you have to weld straight pipes out the back. Matter of fact I think the 2 valve engines sound much more aggressive with the RMB than do the S4 engines. Just make sure the pipes fit out the back like they normally would with a muffler. It need not be a hack job.

Hey John, have you thought about a high flow 2 in x 2 out muffler for the rear. Kind of like some of the Camaro's have.

It doesn't sound like your having a flow problem yet. Might not hurt to try?

Cheers

My 87 S4 has the RMB installed, and it makes
a really sweet sound from about 3000RPM's and up.
It's not too loud on the highway, but you can
still hear the hum when the radio is on... and
needless to say - I LIKE IT LIKE THAT!
