Hey Greg,
didn't mean you shouldn't be able to get your money out of your set, just bemoaning the fact that some people are charging what seems to me outrageous prices and people who haven't found the rennlist are paying it because they're desperate for the information. I'm all for free enterprise and since I didn't drive the original conversion, I have no 'ownership' beefs about the sales. I've made copies for some folks for the same price the original group paid so I can hardly object to others doing the same, just that it seems to me to be a rip-off of other owners when you sell them for $100 + as some have done. When it comes down to it, unless you own the microfiche, all of it is bootleg.
If you do decide to list it on ebay, leave out any reference to "CD" in the title....seems to be a 'red flag' to ebay/Porsche judging from the items I've seen listed.

Just a friendly word of warning. Selling or buying copies of copyrighted documents, for which you do not own an original copy, is a violation of copyright law. You are allowed to make ONE copy as a backup. You are not supposed to make more than one copy, and you are not supposed to sell any copies to anyone.
There are some folks (within the Customs Service of the Federal Government) who's job it is to uphold copyright laws. (I'm not saying I'm a Customs agent, but I am a Fed, and I have several friends who are Customs agents.)
My advice - buy the hard copy set, use it wisely, then when you sell your 928, sell the set for what you paid for it or (with luck) even more. :^)

Before this goes much furhter, let me first say that if I read of activity that I think may be illegal, I am required to tell the appropriate authorities of what I read, and where I read it. Not reporting alleged illegal activities can be viewed as being an "accessory after the fact".
I really do not want to turn in or "rat-out" fellow 928ers. If you feel the need to sell or buy boot-leged copies of the Service manuals, then do so privately. Do not mention it on this or any other publicly viewed BBS. Whether you know it or not, posting messages about conducting illegal activities can put the folks who manage the BBS in a position of having to explain why their site is being used for fencing of stolen or boot-legged goods. I'm sure none of us want to put any of the 928 sites in jeopardy.
Enough said.

Ed, did you just do that?

If you own an original set of service manuals, then YOU are allowed to make a copy of it as a backup. You are not supposed to sell that backup to anyone. In fact, if you sell the original set, you are supposed to destroy the copy. Also, buying a backup copy that someone else made is considered an illegal action for both the seller and the buyer. (Hey, I don't make the laws, I just report them.)
Telling you folks about copyright law is not a violation of the law. Asking you to discuss it off-line is also not illegal. Lastly, reading the first-hand account of someone possibly breaking the law, and not reporting it, is also illegal.
I say this is probably a good place to drop the subject. ~ Merry motoring ~

I think the crime is the limited amount of good quality service manual information. I don't want to make a federal case out of this or anything, but if someone out there has the technical skill to figure out how to make a ledgable, modern text form of an out-of-date, out of print, unavailable service manual for a car the is no longer in production, and becoming obsolete because we are forced to drive them not knowing how to repair them. I think they should be congradulated and supported. These cars are extremely diffecult to work on with out a reference. A machanic that has any experience repairing this exotic super car are getting rare. Don't you think that if the text was so valuable, Porshe would be doing it. I bought a copy of the manual on fiche. I went to my local library and attempted read the thing and make some hard copies. Frankly the fiche is a joke. And the jokes on me. I could hardly see the thing on the reader and the printed copies are worse. I think the copy I bought is incomplete. There wasn't any reference to the CIS injection. If I can get a back up copy from someone on C/D for $ 30.00 to $ 80.00 I'm in.. Ya what ever, a crime is a crime. If anyone feels the need to be a tatal tale, go ahead. But I won't let you in my sand box anymore.

Well, maybe I could simply give someone 30 bucks to pay for the shipping charges for letting me read their CD manual. In exchange I will loan you my copy of Steven Kings "The Stand" which I have read onto a series of 20 audio cassettes. <img src="graemlins/oops.gif" border="0" alt="[oops]" />
Bottom line is that Ed's right. Intellectual properties should be protected. If it was mine I'd want to see the money i invested in it's protection working for me- especially since I DO recieve monies from my own intellectual properties. I'll buy the setof manuals and a CD backup just in case.
