Come on Dan, that's not true! Whle the GPS systems might be pretty worthless (as long as you know where you are when they valves crash) the new DVD system might come in very handy.

hey guys,
I am new to this site, be prepared for alot of questions. I am the recent owner of the 928 listed below. any way, I have a few questions for you to start.

Anyone know a good mechanic for my car in southern MA. I need the timing belt done. (I too have heard that the cars after 79 are interference).

do in need to replace the tensioner? My car only has 40K.

How difficult is the timing belt job? I wouldn't consider it myself because I am mechanically declined.

feel free to provide any tips or sites that might have a full t belt job description.

thx

dude, you need to get:

1. workshop manuals.
2. tech spec handbook (torque settings).
3. alldata subscription for your 84 MY ($25).
4. parts cd-rom (useful for ordering) there is a gentleman on this site who might PM you and be able to provide you with this cd-rom if you only ask.
5. visit the nichol's site.

your practical mechanic's course has just begun.

thx for the info,
to be honest, i don't feel that any manuals or reference materials would help me enough too get me too attemp the work myself. do you think that a good all around mechanic could do the job without those materials. I know most of the mechanics i deal with have those "timing belt guides" that deal with each job by make and model. w/ some luck, maybe i'll meet someone that would fax me the proper info out of the manuals to assist whoever i have do the job.

thx for the help, i'll work on getting that stuff .

If Porsche isn't talking and everything else is anecdotal...
A team effort is required.
Need a bunch of DIY types with different model/years who are going to tangle with the Belt Change at home.
Need a bore scope...
Is there room?

You know, I appreciate the trivia and all, but it is kind of a moot point. When the belt in my '85 S2 [Oh holy hell with 10.4/1 compression yes sir indeedy she is an inter-friggin-ference motor!] gets 30k miles or is 3 years old, I'm going to replace it.

Why?

Bent valves kinda suck. That...and the majority of you don't know about the Secret Black Box (SBB) installed by the nefarious Darth Vader. See, he has a thing for his favorite Porsche [pull up at a light some time- you can almost hear the breathing sounds via the reaction of those sitting there in more proletarian contraptions-], This device [which is also installed in copy machines and most airline aircraft] determines the WORST possible time for a failure to occur.....and then arranges for such.

Which all means...you can go ahead and delay the belt changes because your car's valves will probably not be damaged, but 'ol Darth is waiting. He's going to wait until you are at your most vulnerable-

-with the OTHER [also the one who has a huge say in the monthly budget....] in the middle of no-where...

AND gleefully snap your pretty belt! You'll be dead on the roadside, the "OTHER" will be fuming [and you get to deal with that], and in short order your hobby may come to a close.

Think about that....!

NORMY!

'85 S2 5 speed, and with 25k on the magic belt.

How much would a full t'belt job be at a private shop? After hearing that the assorted parts for a good job cost about 350 (approx.) , porsches quote of about 900 to me doesn't seem all that bad for a total. More than I'd like to spend however.
I had a t belt done in my vw at the dealer. It ran about 250. what a bargain.

Just one more thing, I thought the general agreement was that after 79' started the interference engines. But in the tech forum under t belt maintainance, the first post said that pre 85" wouldn't cause valve damage. this interests me because I have an 84'. I am fairly certain that my 84 will experience damage.

Karmann,

"this car is stessin me out." is a sign of not driving it enough. I bought my 84S about 3.5 yrs ago with 50k on the clock. Had the t-belt and all gears, rollers, tensioner, bearings, seals done first thing for about $1500. Retensioned after 2k and again about every 10-15k. Sneaking up on 100k now. As a result, I don't worry about the belt letting go, possibly mangling the valves, stranding me somewhere unpleasant...

The true joy of ownership with one of these beasts is driving them. Alot. Every chance you get. Soon the smile pasted on your face will be permanent and you'll notice your stress levels are way down. And at some point, you'll catch up on all the maintenance/fixes and the remaining 'issues' will be personality (of the car, not you).

Chucker,
I see the bobber twitchin'...
Don't stress, if the bite is to big and you are concerned - no documentation - just park her or drive like Grandma until you can 'AFFORD' the maintenance. There is no loss of face involved.
But do PROGRAM your maintenance from critical to
non-essential. Some costs simply can't be avoided.
Long term you NEED to do as much of the work as possible to keep ownership costs to a minimum.

Mike,
I hear ya. I am totally not driving the car enough. I don't have a grand at the moment to due the belt and pump change, so I take it for short cruises now and then just to show it off but not even close to how much i'd like to take it out. Hopefully I'll get the job done sooner than later and be on my way. <img src="graemlins/beerchug.gif" border="0" alt="[cheers]" />
