My co-worker ( who sold me my nothing-but-trouble-so-far 928 ) has a '90 500SL w/AMG wheels. It's actually been a very reliable vehicle and has racked up about 10 times the mileage of my 928 in an equal time frame.
I'm hoping his time will come. Revenge will be sweet!!!

I drove a friends early 200? (forgot the exact MY) Silver Spur Edition (I think that's what it was called) and it really looks great. However, I felt the car a bit numb and was not impressed with the brakes or the overall driving experience. I missed our 1989 928S4s road feel, massive breaks and feeling very connected to the road. Just my impression.
Can't really find a easy replacement for the 928, unless we go into the "money is no object category." The Aston Martins look beautiful and would probably be a good 928 alternative, if we had the money....

Haven't driven the 500SL from that era, but the 500E, 1992 to 1994 is a great car. My '92 500E has over 176,000 miles on the clock and still runs great. Room for 4, plus golf clubs or luggage in the trunk. With 326hp, it's no slouch either. But on a long trip, I can get better gas mileage in my 928! Should get over 21mpg heading down to Rennsport in 2 weeks.

Anyone serious about an SL, I know of a '99 SL600 AMG black on black on black, super low miles, highly maintained and the price is right. Located in New Orleans.

Some interesting responses
The last SL500 I drove was almost 10 years ago but I kind of remember it being like a heavier/slower convertible version of the 928. I am going to drive one tonight so I will post my thoughts on driving it later.

I bought the 1991 500SL I looked at,
Pro's,
- Better interior quality
- Rides great around town
- Convertible
Con's,
- Handling in the corners
- Brakes are about the same as a 928S
- Interior is cramped (about 1" more headroom, Unlimited with the top down)
- Chick Car (like a Boxster)
I like the 928 more so why did I buy one? The previous owner had every service at the dealer and did not spare any expense in maintaining the car. He even bought the Michelin Pilots (1k on them) at the dealer.
I am having second thoughts about buying it though.

Looks really clean. I'd be surprised if it does not need shocks.
What you might do now is get signed up on the MBZ boards. This one has a bucketload of good info:
http://mercedesshop.com/shopforum
There are forums for the sports converable models. I don't see it so much as a chic car, but if you feel you need to de-chic the thing then search MBZShop for some performance bits, suspension, shift kits, brake upgrades... all sorts of things you can do.
Enjoy... and welcome to the world of the TriStar! (I just bought my 5th)
