Door Won't STAY Open

Door Won't STAY Open
This is one of those small, but annoying, problems.
I have an 86, 108k, and the driver's side door won't stay open. It's like the detent (or whatever) that is supposed to keep the door open until you PULL it closed is worn away, and every time I open the door to get out...... :-(
Anyway, what is this called, and any tricks to replacing the "door stays open" part?? :-)
The passenger side works better, but I'm sure not like new, so I might just do both sides.
Thanks,
Barry

You probably need a new "door stay" or "door check rod", part #928.537.033.04. They cost about thirty bucks each, and are available from each of the Big Three. I had to replace each of these parts in my '88, and now the doors stay open. You have to get into the door panel to do the job, but it's not bad. Took about an hour and a half for both stays.

I had the part that is actually attached to the door frame crack on the drivers side. I ordered a new one, and they sent me the part in the door...the actuall stop mechanism.
I decided to keep the part and replace it anyway; however, when I finally got it all together, the door was very hard to close and revealed that one of the bolts that holds the door fram portion was loose by rattling. The holder part inside the door is WAY too tight...is this adjustable, does it need to "wear in", or do I simply have it installed wrong?
Normy!

This is a "Door - Check Bracket (holds door open) - All" P/N 928.537.033.04, less than $25 plus shipping. (New - don't bother with used in most cases on these.)
A pretty easy installation.

I recently installed the door "arrestor" in both the driver and passenger side doors. Really makes a difference. Quite stiff for a few weeks then it is great!
There are two allen bolts that are little hard to see inside the door but it is the same size as the one that attaches it to the car body.
Just takes a little perserverance getting them back in but it is worth the trouble.

Thanks Wally, and all.
I'll add it to my "next order" list. :-)
When you say it's a pretty easy installation, does that mean I "don't" have to take door panels off?? It's not so much that I can't, or won't, I just hate to take apart things I don't have too, PARTICULARLY car interiors..... :-)

I did it without removing the door panels. If you look at where it connects with the car body you will see on allen bolt.
If you follow the Arrestor inside the door you will be able to feel ( not see ) two more allen bolts - one top and one bottom. I was able to remove these with an allen socket without actually seeing them.
It is harder to reinsert them, that is where the patience comes in.

Well, apparently the mechanism end of the door stay is actually inside the door, and it doesn't pull out the front like one would think (and prefer). So now I have the old one that fell back inside the door, and the new one laying on top of it inside the door (I was trying to feed the new one through the coin holder opening - it slipped, and I dropped it) :-(
So....... what's the least amount of panel(s) that I have to remove to get these out (and the new one in) and how do I remove those panels??
And this job looked so "simple" when I first started it...... :-(
Thanks,

Barry, I attached a picture of my door support. Bolt 13 is the allen bolt which holds the unit to the body of the car.
The unit itself has two bolts the same size holding attaching it inside the door. When these 3 bolts are removed I was able to open the door a little farther and then pull the unit forward. I inserted it the same way.
Concerning getting it out you will have to take out the bolts in the door and pull the bottom clips that hold the door panel on. You might be able to get it out without taking the entire panel off. The entire panel just requires a few more bolts. The only tricky thing to taking off the entire panel ( at least for me ) was that you have to unscrew the circular plastic piece behind the door lock ****. Good Luck.
