Red face Total Power Loss????????

Help,

Car has been running O.K(ish) for the past few days & recently gained most of the power back after car was stumbling on acceleration.

Unfortunately, leaving work this afternoon in what can only be classed as the worst downpour the U.K has seen this year, car ran very sluggishly. Got onto the dual carriageway & lost all power 3 times. Pulled over & restarted the car, now idling at 600 rpm in Park & around 350 in Drive & sometimes cutting out. Managed to limp the car home with some stages normal & other stages struggling to keep the revs up as the car just loses all power.

I'm assuming electrical, can anyone offer a novice any further guidance??

Thanks in advance,
Gary (90s4)

Gary-
I suggest you also check vacuum lines. If you are unfamiliar with their location, for i.d. go to
<a href="http://members.rennlist.com/v1uhoh/underthe.htm" target="_blank">http://members.rennlist.com/v1uhoh/underthe.htm</a>
or <a href="http://sis125.berkeley.edu/928.html" target="_blank">http://sis125.berkeley.edu/928.html</a>
should you not have a schematic.
On my '90, the vacuum check line has a 3-way fitting, and has fallen off twice- the rubber was actually rotted and needed a patch. Results much like yours.
Cheers,
Donald

I'm not an expert, although replying on this forum might make me one...

I would check your spark plug wires. To verify, start the car up at night and open the hood. If your wires are bad, you will see a very nice light show!

Good luck,

I second checking the vacuum lines. I had a brief bout of stumbling going on a while back and that's what it was, a disconnected line.
