Alt. off again:)
Dropped the Alternator again.
Found an Alt/auto electrical repair shop here in Midland with - believe it or not - a set of 928 pubs.
He will probably explain all tomorrow but, I am curious.
1. Dennis and others have suggested a jump to a 60 or 80 ohm 5 watt resistor when installing a rebuilt alt. Where would I get one? Probably two, as my 82' supposedly gets the soldered-in version and I might smoke one.
2. I was thumbing thru the new Performance Automotive catalog yestrday and they are indicating a external regulator for ALL 928's showing different part #'s for various years.
I thought the regulator was internal on the 928 Alternators. Am I missing something here? Is this an aftermarket external mount Regulator? Point of fact one of the three Alts I have had recently had what appears to be the regulator mounted, basically, in the center of the alt.(Paris-Rhone model). And one has -this is Gospel- what appears to be a Yugo (swear to God!) regulator also center mounted on a Marshal alt.
What's the scoop here?
Last of all. I know I need to mount the exciter in series with the ammeter /voltage gauge for a dash reading, but in a pinch can I put the resistor/exciter somewhere a little more handy for temporary test of Alt?
TIA

Old and New,
Nope, no confusion on my part, other than Performance Automotive attempting to sell a regulator with picture I might add for ALL 928's.
I was wondering if that stiffer -higher ohmed-exciter/resistor can be locally puchased at an Electronis outlet or do I go thru Porsche and or the Big Three?

Just recently purchased a 1982 928. the first thing I had to do was replace the alternator last weekend. I replaced the paris rhone unit with a rebuilt bosch unit purchased here locally for 140 and change. Had to use the fan and pully from the old alternator and also had to put a ground strap to the alternator from a mounting bolt as the bosch unit had isolation rubbers in the mount. Unit seems to be working great, prior unit was spiking alot between 18v and 12v. I would definatly recommend the bosch unit for those with a paris rhone.

John,
I misunderstood, I think.

Check page 11 for 5 and 10 watt wirewounds. Lots of others to choose from, too.
