I guess another way to consider this might be: would you pay your purchase price for the car today? (this is presuming you paid what you considered the going rate, or market rate, at the time. If you got a honkin' steal-of-a-deal, that doesn't count!!)
I would happily pay my original purchase price again for the car, even in its current run-down and beat-up condition. I bought it blind, and the price I offered was so low I felt bad about it when I took delivery. So I wrote the seller another check for a few $k. Even then it was a very good buy. But the original purchase price is just a slice of the total cost of ownership. If I had to come up with that original price plus the bonus payment, and additionally duplicate all the time and dollars that have gone into the car since, the picture gets foggy all of the sudden if you look at the car solely in dollars-invested terms. I like to drive the car, and I do drive it when I'm home. So do I need to factor in the avoided cost and avoided depreciation on the BMW, Benz, Jaguar that I didn't have to buy as a daily driver? Suddenly it's all in focus again. The 928 has worked out well in the big picture.

I've only had mine 1 month and it's a million times better. Of all the stuff I've done to it the not over heating any more gets top billing! It's great to actually be able to drive the car I bought. The exhaust is fixed also and sounds mean!.. Jason

It was cheap when I bought it & I planned to just run it into the ground without spending any money.

But it sort of grew on me so now i have done a lot of stuff.

Interesting question. I purchased my '85 in '93 for $13K with 60K miles on it. Right after that the TT failed and for years I had bad electric problems where the car wouldn't even start.

Since then I've been doing all my own maintenance and have not had ANY mechanical problems and other than a weak alternator, no electrical problems.

I just replaced my plugs at 155K miles and based on their condition I'd say the engine is in perfect condition.

So to make a long story, short. It's definitely in better condition now then when I bought it.

Definitely better but a work in progress. It will be 98% mechanically perfect after this coming week!

Close to perfect for a 15 year old car.

It's a labor of love.
Regardless of how much I have already done, my To Do list is still ridiculously long. But to be honest, I enjoy the anticipation of the next item on the list almost as much as seeing it completed.

It sat in a garage for 12 years before I bought it. Running has got to be better than sitting.

I expected to hear more of this, after all, that's a popular position for a lot of 928 critics: "The cars are cheap and they get run into the ground because the maintenance costs are so high."

I guess those of us on Rennlist may not represent the typical owner, though, huh?
