Has anyone converted their 928 A/C system over to R134A and had problems with the A/C belt not staying on the pulleys?
Mine was converted and works well, but the first belt I had on there twisted around and got chewed up. I replaced it with a Gates (junk in my opinion) and that belt twisted and stopped driving as soon as I opened the throttle (quick blip in the garage). The tension was fine and the pulleys seem to align properly.
The only thing I can think is the additional pressures of the 134A in the system cause the belt to jump once the compressor locks in and drives. Both times the belts flipped themselves over on the pulleys. Luckily they did not get into the other belts....a nightmare if I lose the belt that drives the oil pump to suck the oil out of the turbochargers. I could fill the exhaust with oil in a matter of seconds!
I have a Continental belt I am going to try today and see what happens. I have never had any luck with Gates belts on anything.....including my 1979 Scirocco.

I doubt that the conversion has anything to do with the belt problem. A heavy load should cause slippage, not flipping. A belt that flips is almost always due to mis-alignment or improper installation.

Are you sure the belt is the right size, and not too narrow? If it is a properly sized belt, the usual reasons for problems are the belt being too loose, a pulley being bent, or the pulleys not being aligned. More than once I've seen where belts were installed in the wrong order on the crank pulley, and one or more belts were on an angle.

The Continental belt did the trick. I refuse to use gates products anymore.....too many instances of them not working for me. I put over 80 miles on the car this weekend, with no problems with the belt whatsoever. I didn't even get the car out of the garage with the gates belt. perhaps it was the wrong size? All that matters now is it is fixed.
