Regarding those BMW V8's. The early ones had some nikasil cylinder-liner issues which eroded over time in the face of sulfur in US gasoline. But honestly most such motors have either long since died of the disease, or are likely to be immune.

The modern V8's seem fine based on the half-dozen ones I've encountered among family/friend cars.

I'd actually considered either the e39 5'er or the e38 7'er as a daily driver - you can find well preserved examples rather affordably. But since I already have one expensive-parts-and-maintenance german vehicle, I went the opposite direction and got a late-model japanese sedan for daily duty. Perhaps not as much soul, but it sure does fire up each morning without complaint.
