Paul,
Our cars have an in tank strainer. If you follow the fuel pump inlet line back to the tank you will either see a strainer or in tank fuel pump. If it's a pump you will see the electrical connections. If no pump, the strainer unscrews from the tank. I believe the in tank fuel pump also unscrews, but not sure. Make sure you use a lot of penetrating lubricant before trying to unscrew it. I've just replaced my tank on the euro due to the strainer being frozen to the brass female insert. One twist and the insert tore lose from the tank.

Paul,
I went to replace my in tank strainer, and it spun the insert - so far sealed up with epoxy, as new tanks are rare and $ here. If you get the tank empty, and pull the level sender unit out of the top, you can see the strainer with a torch, and get some idea of its condition. If it looks covered in crud, see if you can clean it with a long probe of some sort, but they seem to break up with age - mine was in pieces.
jp, looking for a way to splice a filter in front of the pump???

Aaaargh, John! I'm contemplating replacing my in-tank pump, which I suspect isn't working. I haven't looked at it yet, but understand that you can hold the insert to prevent it from spinning. New tanks appear to be unavailable; one of the guys here in Sydney had to settle for a secondhand one after his GTS was rear-ended.

Glenn,
Cant visualize any way you cold hold the insert! Hole in top of tank is too small to get my hand through, as I undertsand it, there is a threaded brass insert molded into the base, and if the pump or pick up filter isnt lubricated when fitted, or over tightened, you are history when you try to remove it next. Somebody reported heating the area to soften the body plastic, removing the insert, coating it with goo of some sort, and replacing, allowing it to cool, and got it sealed. I just covered the joint with PC11 petrol proof epoxy - 5 months and counting, still dry. At the time, I think it was Jim Bailey who said he recommends not touching the internal filter at all, as this happens so easily.
Eddy in Adelaide gave me a price of A$1350 at the time, in case I needed it, which is cheaper than US prices.
What symptoms of pump failure do you have? My CIS car has a pump whose part number is that of an LH system (lower pressure - 37 vs 75psi), and it provides all the flow and pressure required, so its staying there until it misbehaves.
jp 83 Euro AT Riyadh, soon to be in Oz.
