Post 928 at Pikes Peak International Raceway (video)

I took my S4 to a PCA DE at PPIR recently and had a blast driving it around the banked oval. It wasn't the greatest on the infield course, but with proper track tires it might have been fun.

I have a RMB, so the sound was glorious, and I received a number of compliments on it from corner workers and onlookers. The sound is quite different from the other cars on the track, and the aural experience is awesome inside the car as well.

Performance-wise, the S4 could easily match the pace of a 993, and would quickly overtake most older 911s, 924s, 944s, 914s, etc. on the straights. The car actually felt like it was being sucked to the ground as I went faster around the oval, and I was able to go 100 MPH when entering and close to 100 MPH when exiting.

The GTS front brake kit allowed me to stop very quickly and brake late, although you can really tell that they're working hard to stop so much mass! I have aftermarket coilovers and front drop-links that makes the car much less wallowy than the stock setup, but it would still dive a bit more than I like when braking hard from 110 MPH to 60 MPH for a turn. Sorry, but I'm spoiled by having a C4S that has Hand of God brakes and super-stiff suspension.

As I stated, on the infield course it didn't do so well, and was one of the slowest cars in my run group through that section. The Kumho 712s have decent grip for a street tire, but they're not really good for the track. The car was actually quite composed, and I was able to sling the tail out a few times in a controlled fashion. I'd hate to have this thing break loose on me, but overall it was a well-balanced and predictable car.

My times were in the 1:13 range, which was comparable to some, but slower than many others. A 911 race car was running 1:02, a 996 1:06, a 944 Turbo 1:07, and a Boxster S 1:08, all with track tires. A 993 C4S with street tires was running 1:09.

Here's a link to a MPEG showing me going around most of the track. The sound is pretty good, so turn up the speakers if you have them.

I probably won't leave this up long as it's big (9M) and will be a real bandwidth hog.

I will probably take the 928 to some other DEs, but I've recently traded my C4S for a 993 racecar, and that's going to be the track beast. Here's picture of it next to the S4:
