What year & model do I have?!
I'm confused. I bought my euro thinking it was an '81. After decoding my vin from internet sources I verified it being an '81 because from what I understand the "B" in my vin means 1981. When I called the Porsche dealership to get the engine code he said my chasis # says it's a 1980 with engine code M28/12. I don't know who to believe. I'd love to believe I have the 4.7 as the dealer tells me. Maybe someone can tell me where exactly on the engine I can locate the engine code.

I saw that discussion and although it had very useful information I still have questions. I believe the engine code is on the front of the engine block on the right side, but I have not been able to locate it.

If your Euro is a 928 (80 or 81) it has the 4.5L. (229 HP) If it is a 928S it has the 4.7L (300 HP).
See the <a href="http://www.928gt.com/928specs/928specs.htm#Specs" target="_blank">Engine/Performance Spreadsheet</a> page on 928 Specialists web site.
The engine code is stamped on the block, but you may have to do some cleaning to be able to find it.

It has 'S' spoilers and flat dish wheels that the S has but those could be added afterwards. I don't know how to tell if it has the 'S' front suspension or not. I think it's the S but the PO didn't know which it was.
The Dealership says it has the 4.7 but they also said it's an '80 which I don't think it is and they have no info for '81 euros.

Flormat, look through the search on this board I had a question about engine codes and it was clearly explained to me. The stamp is on the front of the engine behind the radiator fan as you look straight down. It my be covered with dirt/grease and you will need a falshlight to see it. I think that mine was M28/15 for the U.S. 5-speed version and the M28/16 is the automatic for the U.S. These are 1982 numbers. Good luck and tell me what part of Michigan you are in. I'm in the Charlevoix area and would like to get Michigan 928 owners together for a lunch at the Rowe Inn just outside of the East Jordan area. <img src="graemlins/burnout.gif" border="0" alt="[burnout]" />

Thanks so much everyone, I figured it out. Thanks Chucker I looked right where you said and there was the engine code staring right at me, not a speck of dirt on it. M28/12, so it is an '81 S. The previous owner thought it was a regular 928.
Thanks again all
