gearbox problems/experiences with 928 Intl.?
Hi all,
I am considering the purchase of an 82, 5 speed, 928. It sounds as though it's in pretty good shape with the exception of the
transmission. According to the owner, the transmission "sticks" or is "hard to shift." I have not driven the car yet.
After poking around some, it seems that the '85 and later gearboxes are better. Moreover, the G28-55's have the more desirable gear ratios.
Questions:
1. Will a later transmission fit into an '82 928?
2. Anyone had experience with 928 Intl. transmissions? Any thoughts on their quality/value?
Feel free to PM me if you prefer.
Thank you!
Bob

I would suggest that you find out if you really need a very expensive transmission first.
A great many "transmission problems" are clutch problems. Do some homework - search the archives for everything that you can find on clutch adjustments.
You should also search for transmission lube or oil.
928 International is a top flight supplier, operated by honest, helpful people. (One of them is WAY too big, but that doesn't make him a really bad person ....)
You should be happy dealing with either of the "big three" 928 vendors - especially us, of course.

Bob,
You should drive the car, take detailed notes on how the clutch, shifting, acceleration etc. etc.., behave, feel, and sound (and smell). Also note how many miles are on it. Search this forum for others who have experienced the same symptoms and find out what the most common fix has been. A gear oil change would be a good start. I had a clunky, hard shifting, jumpy transmission when I first bought mine, but after draining out the old sludge, tightening the bolts, and putting in some new synthetic, it was very smooth --and still is. All fears of transmission replacement quickly evaporated. If you purchase the car, drain the gear oil, and find a ton of metal flakes and chunks of things that make your blood rush to your feet, then you might start thinking about a transmission overhaul.
Worst case? ....as Wally said "a very expensive transmission"
