On an 85, my FP doesnt run until the engine is running. i want to check for fuel leaks before I take the car on a 600 mile trip this weekend. Will I do any harm if I jump the FP relay to pressureize the system with the car not running to check for leaks?
Thanks

it is safer to just pull the ignition relay and crank the engine on the starter motor....the fuel pump runs when cranking ...

Jumpering the fuel pump you COULD if you had a leaky injector spray fuel into a cylinder and then when you do start the car if another cylinder fires before the one with liquid gasoline in it Then on the compression stroke that piston cylinder would be trying to compress a none compressable liquid....that can bend the connecting rod , lift off the head ,or split the cylinder,....so never have the fuel pump running for long unless you wish to remove all the spark plugs and be sure that there is no pool of liquid gasoline in one of the cylinders. While this rarely happens the results make it worth mentioning.

Your nose should tell you pretty quickly if there is a leak. Let it idle a minute and look underneath....
When I finished replacing my tank, rear hoses and the front pressure line, I wanted to test for leaks because of the number fo fittings that had been disturbed. I jumpered the relay with two long leads (with spade tags into the socket) with a switch on the end so I could turn it off quickly from moutside the car. I actually found a leak and fixed it. I left the pump running maybe 10 minutes to be sure. After that, having been standing dry for months, it fired up first hit of the starter.
