After my recent tbelt R&R I wanted to fit new accesory belts but was short the pwr steer belt.

As customs decided to hold up the package I ended up driving the car to a car show (1st place import) sans belt..............it felt a little heavy in the parking lot then.

If you drive your T-Bird at 928 speeds, it will most likely blow up.

But it will feel very light for a few seconds prior to impact into an obstacle.

Heavy feel is a symptom of a car that has outstanding high speed stability.

When driving 30mph, you don't really appreciate this. When driving 120+ mph, then you do.

A stock 928 comes alive at speed - punch a stock 928 at 60, then do the same on the T-Bird and the T-Bird will feel heavier... the Porsche lacks low end grunt which is fixable with piles of $$$ (building up 928 engine or going with Chevy power). Put a 400+ HP, 400+ Lb torque (provided the motor makes low end torque) motor in the 928 and you will find it feels a whole lot lighter. The other is the variable power steering... we have converted ours to GM based units which makes the car feel lighter but destroys the "feel" that is so wonderful with the stock power steering unit.

HTML Code:
It's very comfortable at 100.
Even better when you get out of third gear; one hand on the steering at max revs in fifth & it just feels so stable.

Marton, I'm just missing it then. I can only hit max revs in fourth. No doubt my auto box could use another gear though, especially with the 2.54 final drive. There are a few well-defined moments when the 2.20 would be appreciated.

Absolutely! My steering levels out around 100 (not that I ever drive that fast ), and feels absolutely light and controllable at 130, which is, I understand, Porsche's idea for this car.

maybe a gravitational problem where you are. Other than that I have no idea what you are talking about. I think you are mistaking heavey for solid and smooth

The sensation of "heaviness" comes from the weighty control inputs on the 928. The car itself is pretty agile for its age/size.

Speed-sensitive boost and fly-by-wire pedals would make parking a bit easier, but that'd defeat the whole persona of the car.

So I guess the 928 looks like a "shark", but drives like a "whale"?

Looks like a shark, drives like a shark. You either get it, or ya don't.

My wife's beamer has a very light steering feel and I don't like it near as much as the feel of the shark.

I would assume that the 928, like other German cars of that vintage, has a variable ratio steering where the steering effort to move the wheels is reduced as the speed increases. This effect gives you maximum power at slow speeds, like parking, and goes to almost no power assist at speed to give you maximum road feel.

Can anyone confirm this?

Default I seem to recall....

A post here or an article somewhere that the shark gets smaller & lighter the faster you go. Thats been my experience. Mine is even a bit floaty at legal hwy speeds, but takes a set like its on rails once I double that.
