Question Bleeding the cooling system

Hi all,
Need any good suggestions on how to get all the air out of my cooling system. Having just done cam belt, water pump etc. I filled the engine as best I could through the top hose, likewise the radiator. Topped up the expansion tank and started up the engine. Running fine but the temperature needle reaches only the first marker while the lamp at the top of the temp guage comes on after a bit and no heat from the heater. I've been squuzing the hoses until my fingers are burning and I've got life from the heater but I know there is still air in there!
Any good methods of shifting all the air out please ?????

Thanks in advance

Hi Linus,

You can park the car on a severe slope with the nose high. That and squezing the lower hose with the heat on is the best way I know of.

When I did my Tbelt on my M28/22, I had to remove my radiator. Burping the system takes time - The below caption is taken directly from 1984 Chilton Porsche Manual - AKA Chiltons Import Car Reapair Manual 1984

Refill the cooling system as follows: Set the heater on the Hot position, remove the vent plug (I left my cap off ) on the radiator hose, fill the cooling system, start the engine and run it for one minute at fast idle, replace the vent plug (or cap) when no more bubbles appear at the opening.

Sounds simple enough but it took me over an hour to get it straight. The thing I did different was rather than start and run at fast idle for one minute, I ran it until the thermostat opened and I actually saw the coolant ciculating through the expansioon tank - and all the bubbles were burped. I then replaced the cap while she was running - all was well.

Hope this Helps -

Sometines removing the small vent hose from the top of the radiator will help.
