Default Tranny back lash

I saw in another thread J.Bailey said "reset the back lash" How is this done? I always thought my 5 speed had more back last than it should. What casuses this and how much is too much?

Thanks
Kyle

I suspect Jim is talking about the setting of the ring gear clearance with the pinion gear in the differential. The symptom is a gear whine under certain conditions if the clearance is too large. If you are concerned about any 'clunk' you feel on gear changes or between forward and reverse gears, look elsewhere; By the time a differential clearance is big enough to be felt while driving, you'll be waking up neighborhood dogs as you drive by.
