Default '85 Euro 5spd for sale in IN

I was just checking in on some of my usual, dealer websites and noticed this sleek looking ride at Buxton Motorsports:

http://buxtonmotorsports.com/17.php

I bought my car from Buxton and had a great experience, but I have no affiliation with this car or BMI other than that. I just wanted to pass along a link to an interesting car for those in the market.

He (Brian Buxton) used to be active in the 928 community. Probably a safe bet. Looking for sidemarker lights & front/rear reflectors...

10 years on the timing belt. Be careful on the test flog.

This car is overpriced.

The description sounds like it has seen a lot of restoration, probably is a nice car. That 310 HP Euro motor screams !!! Brian knows his 928s...

Talked to Brian myself. A well known car in PCA circles, sounds like present owner was skating on POs diligent care of the car. Should be a good car after servicing.

Is a 16v euro an interference engine?

It would be neat to have a 5sp euro for the track, but this one is probably too nice (or expensive) as a starting point.

I had a 85 16V euro, with the dual dizzies,
I tried the cams in various locations, and turned the crank slowely and found no interference, but that is one out of how many? and whos to say if they would touch at higher rpms.

All 16v cars are non-interference. I've been looking at this car, contacted Brian and got a lot more information. It looks like a very nice car, a desirable euro in great shape, clean history of registrations, passes emissions, just in need of a good service. But, to like this car you have got to love black. Black body, black interior, blacked-out side markers, and the spoilers have been flex-primed and painted black so they have that shiny look just like the body panels - no texture. I've got detailed pictures and I'm trying to decide if I like the look.

Be careful.....the 4.7L high compression "euro" motors ARE interference!!!! So a broken timing belt on an 80-86 16V Euro would be very bad!!

Dammit people, we have got to decide once and for all:

Are the 16v high-compression 4.7 Euro motors interference or not?

>>> Many say NO.

>>> Some say YES.

>>> One or two say ONLY WITH CARBON BUILDUP.

C'mon, we have got to reach a consensus.

JEC, I confirmed that the 85 euro I had 10.5:1CR was a NON interference engine! So I know of at least one high compression 16V that would not have bent valves.

Since Porsche only specified setting the engine at 45 deg off TDC when changing a timing belt with the introduction of the 1985 32 valve engine...that supports the belief that the 16 valve was NOT interference. The big problem is bad data... over the years many 16 valve owners were sold a valve job when their engine lost a timing belt but few shops after they sold the job , pulled the engine and pulled the heads were up to telling the owner "Hey guess what your valves are fine, we did all that work for no reason " So we have people who believe that they had bent valves. That said I think that carbon build up has bent a few valves so drive them hard !!! keep the valves clean Many shops see 944s which even the two valves are valve benders and ASSUME that since a 944 looks like 1/2 of a V-8 that the 928 would also bend valves. I do not think that the 16 valve SHOULD bend valves BUT if I had the high compression Euro 16 valve I would still act like it MIGHT !!! And I would feel very bad if I told some one that their car would NOT then for one reason or another ...different cams , shaved heads , carbon what ever it did ....

And in this case, what difference does it make if it's interference? You know that the TB is going to be part of the instant $5k or you'll need to budget for get-it-back-on-schedule maintenance that will be required to make it a good driver again. It's not "if" it needs a new belt, it's "now".

Exactly why I didn't bite. And I have already had one too many black cars. Even so, this car would make a great keeper, and is said to have cold AC. If I were interested, I would make an offer just one notch above insulting. Say current asking price minus what it would cost to have a pro do the TB service [2500.00] and minus another 500 or so.

That's not insulting, that's market. I would go really low....
