I will be giving a workshop presentation at one of the local hospitals in Austin Saturday. Anyone know of a good place to take the wife for a nice dinner and some live Jazz? We will be driving the 79 for the first road trip since I changed the headgaskets. Thanks to Greg, I will have the Road Help List aboard. Thanks in advance.

Thanks, Miss Nicole. I'll ask around at the hotel. Your "Worldly" knowledge and presence on the list, is much appreciated.

Anthony-
Post the question to the local PCA: <a href="http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/HCRPCA/" target="_blank">http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/HCRPCA/</a>
and they will steer you right. While there are a few overlook restaurants, most live music is down on 6th street.
Have fun!

You want to go to the Oasis for a sunset drink/dinner. The absolute best place to go with the SO. This is the place Nicole is thinking about.
As a bonus, there is an awesome twisty road called Lime Creek road that will give John K. a run for his money on the hooligan factor.
HTH,
Scott

Anthony:
You can find a lot of information on Austin on Citysearch (http://austin.citysearch.com)
Information on "The Oasis" (at Lake Travis) is at <a href="http://austin.citysearch.com/profile/10220942/" target="_blank">http://austin.citysearch.com/profile/10220942/</a>
There are quite a few shark owners in Austin - so don't be surprised, if you have some close encounters. One gentleman there owns 5 of our beloved beasts...

-When I flew from Austin, they always kept us at the Four Points just north of the mall, way on the north side of town. Since we have to have 24 hours off at least once each week, and our scheduling department had all the efficiency of a 1928 farm tractor, we wound up having plenty of nights off [so they didn't forget]...to enjoy the town. Inevitably, someone procured a rental car on the cheap and we wound up down on 6th street. Lots of good live music places! Good times for all. I'd also recommend Oil Can Harry's [bring a girl~] which is down on 4th street.
-Another great place, if you have said rental-beater and appreciate Czech culture is New Braunfels, where you can enjoy a plate of pierogi or halupki along with some of the best PILS brewed this side of Plzen. Just bring the heartburn medication....
Enjoy!

N-
Spot on except New Braunfels is basically German (Verein zum Schutze deutscher Einwanderer, Prince Carl of Solms-Braunfels, and all that, you know).
Aren't pierogi Polish?

Sorry Nicole; you would have to be a 19th century kind of German to qualify, and in Texas
. In any event they were a little light on the protection part... which should have been from Comanches, the "Adelsverein" itself which did not own the settlement land, rattlesnakes, drought, and other associated perturbations.

Nicole,
If you ever lived in a Rust-belt city or town ie;
Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Chicago, Baltimore, Philly, Dayton to name a few. Particularly before downsizing, the steel bust, neuclear families, and back when a person had one job for their entire life. Mom's stayed at home...
Communities were tighter than the Hispanic/Chinese sections of town.
Immigrants 'clumped' Irish, Italian, Lithuanian, Chekoslavakian, Estonian ...
German and other Nordic races seemed to be more of the rural agrarian types and spread out ...
EVERYWHERE. Here in the south west there are -if you look- quite a few German communities who still -if there's enough of them- hold German festivals -more of a Schwabisher nature- cultural music, dress, food, beer the whole shebang.
Unfortunately, while tasty, the beer and food, are rarely close to the real thing.
If you want to see something really odd, there are German Farming communities in Mexico and those folks are fluently, tri-linguial, It's a hoot to observe any nationality carry on a three way conversation jumping from German, Spanish, and English without a thought -natural.
It is also my understanding that there are enormous farm communities in Argentina, Venezuela, and Brazil.
Historically speaking they were a tough breed but took major losses in life, everyone did when it came to Comanche raids until families started grouping and the Texas Rangers started exterminating anything remotely Indian.
Little known fact: the Comanche were so harsh that even the Apache lived in fear of them!
To tie this in with the forum...I've never seen a 928 in these German Communities...now that the Cayenne is selling -bugs and all- maybe Porsche will consider a 3/4 ton pick up for the Texanized Deutchlanders.

Thanks, Gang! Just returned and indeed found the Oasis, overlooking the beautiful lake Travis. The view is very good, but I wouldn't advise going on Easter weekend (many screaming little Munchkins running amok). Much quieter at the bar. The roads around the lake were very nice to drive on. The weather was very cloudy with a heavy drizzle all day Saturday and the roads were somewhat slick, even with the new Yokohama's I put on last week. Could not locate "Lime Creek Road", but just driving in the Hill Country was pretty cool. The Medical company sponsoring the workshop, put us up in the Marriott (I highly recommend) in a suite complete with a hot tub over looking the river. We did do a little bar hopping on 6th Street Saturday night, great fun. Did not see any 928's but a lot of Boxsters and an early 911. I drive too slow for the Austin traffic! I started laughing when I thought Jim N. was right about Texas Drivers LOL! The only problems, when I reset the trip odometer in the driveway I must have broke the odometer gear, it is now inop. I will keep track of the miles and add them back in when I get it fixed. The cruise control crapped out about 3/4 of the way to Austin. I'm pretty sure it's a vacuum related part. It started losing speed very slowly and eventually would not hold speed at all. Trying to keep below 80 mph is tough with out it. All in all, a very enjoyable trip.
