Default Fuse upgrade kits available

I had been looking to upgrade my cars with "Smart fuses"
[URL="http://www.smartglow.com/cgi-bin/r.cgi/index.html"]
They glow when blown, so a quick glance will tell you which, if any, aren't working. Very useful when time is short, at night etc., but what a hard time I had finding them. I could find the 10A-20A-30A packages, but I had trouble finding anyone who carried the 5A ,7.5A, and 15A sizes. No one wanted to order them for me, as the order was small. I finally found someone who had them in stock, but I had to order more than I needed to get them to sell me what I wanted. I now have several hundred fuses of assorted values and thought I'd offer them as complete upgrade kits. These fuses retail for between 1.25 and 1.75 each, if you can find them. I have enough for about 4 or 5 complete 42-44 fuse kits for model years 85-95 only. The 1A fuse is not available / included. If interested, Email me. Cost is $50. for each complete kit including shipping. Specify year. Once they're gone, they're gone.

Though these don't come in 1A versions - you can get 3A versions which should be quite safe for the wiring of the single 1A fused circuit we have.

Bear in mind these will only illuminate to indicate a failure when the power busses that drive those fuses are turned on (e.g. for some with the key in/on) AND when equipment controlled by that fuse is also turned on (switches/relays etc).

Fair price for these I'd say.

I think in my now 10 years of 928 ownership, I've replaced only one fuse. I blew that one changing an interior light, hardly the fault of the car. Do otheres blow a lot of fuses? Am I missing out on a lot of fun that others are having? Inquiring minds want to know!

I have also changed fuses very rarely - the interior light fuse a few times due to fixture failures, and I once I blew up a 50A maxi fuse charging my audio cap a little too fast - I don't recall changing any others...?

I too have blown few, if any, fuses, but have checked the fuses many times. It's usually the first place to look in a no start condition or system failure. These fuses just make the process of checking the fuses, extremely easy. They can't help you with that rare "blown fuse" any more than the standard fuses can. A few weeks ago, at a 928 Dyno Day, my car wouldn't start right after a dyno pull, and had to be pushed off the rack. There were 5 or 6 other owners there, each offering to help in any way they could. The ten minutes of everyone waiting around helplessly while one person read the fuse location chart and pulled and tested fuel pump fuses, etc. would have been reduced to seconds, had I had these fuses. I only wish they had "Smart" relays, as well. It was at that time that one of the other owners suggested using them. I had upgraded my S4, many months prior, but hadn't bothered to do it in the GTS. Lesson learned, I'm doing it now. BTW, no fuses were blown.

After pulling/checking (and yes d-xit) all fuses for some diagnosis....I have a set of these coming from Aurorawires. Not a purpose spec'd 928 set, but a general set. Modest investment, if it helps identify a fault in that string of fuses, it'll be worth it. Fingers crossed for high quality fuses.

Purely as an example here - for a 1990 S4 - fuses like these will indicate a failed fuse (illuminated) for the following fuses:

1) With ignition on: Fuses #17, #18, #28, #39 - #41

2) Only when equipment is actually being operated: Fuses #1-#16, #19-#27, #29-#30, #33-#38, $42-#45

Whilst I understand the intent here - it's actually of marginal diagnostic value unless you understand the configuration of all the fuses. Case 1 above is easy - but case 2 (most) are normally unpowered fuses even with ignition on - a casual glance won't give you any info on these (blown or not) unless you can ensure the equipment is in what should be an operating mode.

Since I like to use quality fuses from Littelfuse and since I don't see a major advantage here over a handy DMM - I wouldn't use these myself. They may be fine as fuses, but I don't think they add much value for us 928 owners. For a car where most fuses fall into category 1 it would be much more useful.

Better bet: Keep a cheap (HF?) Mini DMM in the car for such diagnostics and understand how to use it
