Default Event Notice- SHARKS AT DAYTONA/RENNSPORT REUNION on Nov. 2nd-4th

This is info that was in two emails circulated amongst the Florida 928ers in the past few months. Some of it has been previously posted here a few months ago. Makes for a long post so I apologize, but it should cover pretty much anything anyone should or would want to know about the event. I did try to remove redundant info as best I could.

In Summary for those who do not want to read the novel:

Event: SHARKS AT DAYTONA/RENNSPORT REUNION

Where: Daytona International Speedway

When: Friday Nov. 2nd-Sunday Nov. 4th.

Cost: $60 for a three day ticket.

Web sites are:

Rennsport Reunion III:

Additional info from the emails:

1st email:
Mark your calendars now for Nov. 2-4 for Sharks at Daytona Rennsport Reunion! Long name, but will be an incredible event. Instead of the PCA races held mid Oct. at Daytona, we are planning our fall 928 gathering around the Rennsport Reunion III at Daytona. Anyone wanting to go to the PCA races that is still open for a get together, just our more serious effort will be Rennsport. For those who don't know, Rennsport is a worldwide Porsche gathering put on by Porsche every three years. The 1st one was at Lime Rock in 2001 & 2004 was at Daytona. 2007 was supposed to go to California, but Porsche was so impressed with the results at Daytona, they decided to have this one here in 2007 too. If it goes great again, it might just become a permanent fixture here in the Sunshine State! That would be awesome for us!

If you went in 2004, its almost like dying & going to Porsche Heaven! If you can think of ANY famous Porsche car or Porsche race car driver, you'll see it at Rennsport, I promise you. To see the very 1st Porsche that won at LeMans on the track at the same time as the last Porsche to win at LeMans, that's a treat. Someone told me that for Rennsport Reunion II, that all but a few of the 40+ known Martini race cars were there! For your three day ticket, its pretty much all areas open. You can walk around the garages, up close to the cars, talk to the drivers and owners, truly amazing! I spent about 30 minutes in the garages talking to a driver who raced one of the famous 908 Martini Porsches back in the early 70s! Jerry Seinfeld was just walking around looking at cars like the rest of us. I think I took over 700 digital pics during the 3 days last time. One thing I can tell you about the last Rennsport, THERE WERE NO 928s TO BE FOUND, NONE! Not in any official Porsche displays, not racing, and not even a spectator's car that I saw parked in the infield. I think it was the ONLY model without any representation, except perhaps the 924. That will not happen this time around! We WILL represent!

One note about the three day event different from the previous two Rennsports. There will be specific car corrals for each type of Porsche for spectators to park in, as it 928s, 944s, 914s, 356s, etc. From the positive attention we 928ers received at our Sharks at Daytona OktoberFast & at the Sebring Shark Shiver, I truly believe that we 928ers made this happen. There were comments at Daytona, from PCA & Daytona Track officials about our gathering of 18 928s & how impressed they were with our commitment & how impressive our sharks looked all parked in the semi circle. Comments that our showing is how it should be, cars parked together with other 928s, not all models simply scattered out in one big corral of cars. At Sebring, we had mention of our Shark Shiver gathering in the last TWO Panorama magazines. Patti Mascone from Pano who interviewed me at Sebring just wrote an article recap of the races & she specifically mentioned our 928s & the 928 racers multiple times, starting in the first paragraph! Her very first sentence in her article titled "The Biggest PCA Club Race Ever" describes the scene at the race of the vendors, racers, etc., ending with ".... and a wide school of 28 sharks slithered into a 928 spectator corral". We are getting noticed and getting very positive attention by PCA ! So, we will have an area specifically for us to park together in spite of this event being wall to wall people & cars!

If you need time off work, put in the request now. If we can have 18 at Daytona last year & 28 at Sebring this year simply for PCA races, then we should be able to have 40+ 928s attend easily, no excuses. Let's impress not only PCA & Daytona track officials, how about lets impress the who's who of the Porsche world, including Porsche NA & the factory people too! A ticket for all three days is a measly $60, thats the same price it was three years ago. Get with it Florida Sharkers, this may be a once in a lifetime chance to see Porsche history live & in person! There is no guarantee when or if it will come back to Daytona. Plan now so we can make a 928 Statement!

2nd email:
Thought I'd forward the latest press release below from Porsche North America regarding the upcoming Rennsport Reunion III to be held Nov. 2nd-4th at Daytona International Speedway. We are planning to hold our Sharks at Daytona gathering in conjunction with this incredible world wide Porsche event. There will be a 928 only parking corral in the speedway infield. We hope to have 30 to 50 928s attend, & hope to make an impression upon the world of Porsche. Besides us in Florida, so far there are 928ers coming from Georgia, Alabama, the Carolinas, Ohio, Texas & Virginia.

Plan now to be there at this 928/Porsche event, you will regret it if you do not attend. Rennsport is held only once every three years & this is only the 3rd one so far. I went in 2004(I was Porsche-less at the time too). I summarize it by saying its like three days of Porsche heaven! People attend from around the world. You have still have time to get your schedule sorted out to be a part of something special, for Porsche & especially for 928s. If you need a hotel room, I suggest you get going on booking one now. Even though Daytona is a vacation area with plenty of hotels, they will book up quickly over the coming weeks. Tickets for the event are $30/day or $60 for all three days & are available through the Daytona International Speedway. Call 1-800 Pit-Shop for ordering tickets. Stay tuned as more info will follow in the coming weeks.

There is also the OktoberFast PCA race at Daytona, on Oct.13th-15th. We held our Sharks at Daytona at last year's inaugural race, but Rennsport is a bigger event to have our official Florida fall shark gathering at. Next year, we'll go back to the PCA race for our official gathering too. For those wishing to attend OktoberFast, the web site is: http://www.pcadaytonarace.com/ I know some of us plan on attending the races on Sat. & I hope that there will be a showing of 928s attending. We made a big impression last year at this event, with 18 928s there for the weekend.

So lets hear from everyone here who's planning on attending?? Time to start some buzz about what will be another fantastic gathering of Sharks and Porsches!

I remember going to Sebring every year with my dad back in the early '70s. I remember Steve McQueen placing second by only 8 seconds while driving with a broken foot. I remember the great duels between the 917's and the Ferrari 512's, specifically the Penske entry driven by Mark Donahue. I look forward with great anticipation to this event. I liken it to an opportunity to attend the Masters. All the greats will be there, either in spirit or in person driving those legendary rides. I'll be there for the duration. If you've ever been on the fence about attending a 928 gathering, use this Porsche "Love fest" to break your teetering inertia. Lets put 928's back on the main Porsche map once again. I say 50 cars is a real possibility with all making a maximum effort. See ya there! G

p.s. Oh yeah, there's also a large beach nearby for a quality photo shoot.

Mel,

Any recommendations on where to stay?

Also, I'm trailering the racer there and was wondering what I need to do to get it into the corral.

Default DAYTONA OR BUST! (Hopefully it's Daytona!)

Mel,

Do we need to pre-reserve for parking in the designated 928 Corral area for non-display visiting sharks?

If so, please advise so we can secure that credential...
Otherwise, it's all systems - go, well, save for a few small details...

Thank you for heading up all the coordination for the 928 aspects of this event.
I know it's time consuming, and just didn't want you to think your efforts are going un-noticed.

Looking forward to seeing both you and Pam again before long!

They are having Porsche model specific car corrals, so I'm sure its just a matter of finding where they have us set up for the 928s. We'll be there Thurs. night, so I'll find out exactly where they plan to put us. If they don't already have it set up, I'll try to get us a premium location where all can see us. I plan on getting as large of area that they'll let us have too. Shouldn't be any problem getting your trailered track car into the corral. All that is needed to get into the event is your ticket & pay for infield parking. All 928s will want to enter the track from Williamson Blvd., on the west side of the track, thru the big tunnel. You do not want to take your 928 thru the smaller steep tunnel on the northeast corner of the track, off of International Speedway Blvd.-SR92(the road you exit off of I-95 on). See the track map where I put the arrow.

Regarding where to stay, its pretty much everyone on their own. Some want to stay near the track & interstate, some want to stay on the beach. Daytona being the tourist mecca that it is, you can get just about anything you want there too. That's why I put the links to the Daytona visitor's bureau, etc. to help everyone find a place. Some are talking about coordinating at one specific hotel, but the logistics of pulling that off might be tough. Anyone wanting to step up & locate a hotel that others might want to join them at that'd be great. Perhaps if anyone already has their rooms booked they can post the info on the hotel & others could then try to get a room there too.

Sharkbody,
You got a comfy car, right?

This coastal soul is gonna be somewhere on the beach!

Just keep calling back -- as you know, rooms do open up closer to the date! Good luck!

George,
If I didn't have a strong desire for a few while I'm on the road, that would be an awesome arrangement.

However, I will be @ a hotel on the beach, the name escapes me, but I know it was sold out months ago, when I modified my reservation.

Anyone else attending?

Kim
