225/50-16s all around ?

Trust me. Different tire question/opinion. (sort of)
Front rims 7x16 and rear are 8x16. (plan was to replace with 225/50 and 245/45)
The AVS100's in the 245/50 (or 245/45-50) are not available, and after calling Yokohama they said about 4months.
Now. I do know a place that as a bunch of the 225/50-16's locally. Any reason I might not want to go the same all around (even with the 7" in front and 8" in rear)...............or, goto $$PLANB$$ ?

The original wheels were all 7x16 and the original tires were all 225/50-16. I don't see any reason why you could not fit those tires. The 8" rim will work fine with that tire. It will actually leave a little wider footprint that the front which is the desired result anyway.

Brent. Actually I've got the original 15" phone dials down in the basement, and these are a sort of C2 style the PO put on. (In fact this was one of the selling points to the car, they look great on it).
If I want the 245's in the rear (250's now), I gotta go with Kumhos, S03's, KDWs....etc.

Bob, I cruised the Tire Rack a minute ago. Yokohama has the AVS sport in 225/50 and 245/45 for a pretty good price. I also saw the DuNlop Sport 8000 in the same sizes for $95 each front and $117 each in back.
I personally would be pretty tempted by the Dunlop. IMHO the difference between these and an S-03 on your car is not worth the added expense. Put the extra dough into springs and shocks <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" />

Brent.......thanks. I know the Yoko Sports wont wear as well......no biggie for me with the limited use. (Let me check the Dunlops though).
And you are right, going the SP03's on mine probably is not worth it. (I don't have one of those nice high hp gt's like you <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" /> )
Also. I just put the bilstein/eibachs on 2weeks ago......W O W......huge improvment.

The PO put Dunlop 225-50x16 on the front and 245-45x16 on the rear, all on std 7x16 rims. I've been told the 45's are too wide for std rims, but I've driven 5,000 miles without any problems and would replace with the same sizes.

Bob, I wasn't aware that you had already done the suspension. Heck, you ought to be able to get some use out of the tires in that case.
I normally spring for big buck tires. This last time I chose to get the Kumho MX's since they were half the price of the Mich or Bridge options. So far I am very pleased with them. I have had good luck with Dunlops in the past too. That is still the route I would go were I in your shoes.
DG84S, It's not that the 245 wont work on the 7" rim, its just that you are not gaining any traction by doing so. The tire is too wide for the rim so you are rolling over the sidewalls in hard corners. Those tires need a wider wheel to perform as designed.
It might have been Jim Bailey that told me he tried running wide tires on narrow rims when club racing his older 928. He told me that his times were actually faster on narrower tires. The difference was that the tires were then sized properly to the rim. Bigger is only better when properly supported.

Could be my lucky day. The guy from the local discount tire (www.tires.com) said there are (2) 245/45-16's I want for the rear 8" in Orlando........and they already have a bunch of 225/50-16s now.

I actually ran 205x50x15 on 7 inch rims and it was faster than a 225 width tire but did lower the ride height and looked very strange ! a 245 width tire (245 mm is nearly a 10 inch wide tire )pinched onto a 7 inch rim is rather unstable . " Normal " driving you probably never would know the difference but get into a decreasing radius turn a little too hot and you might think you are driving a 911 as you find yourself looking back toward the part of the road you just drove over ...Most racing organizations simply limit the rim size( Nascar included )you may run tires of any width BUT too wide is slow and unstable . If you want to test the handling find an empty large flat parking lot (devoid of Police) and start driving in a constant radius circle keep increasing speed until the car starts to break loose , odds are the rear with the too big tires will let go first and the car will "oversteer" .

To add to Jim's note... If you do the constant radius turn trick in a earlier, aluminum ball jointed car, make sure you have done the swap to steel ball joints prior to the skid pad test.
It might get ugly if a ball joint fails and then you have massive "understeer".

O K the way an Aluminum lower ball joint fails is NOT that it breaks or collapses under load ! or typically while you are driving down the road . Nearly always they pop apart when someone makes a very sharp turn like pulling into a parking space making a u -turn and the ball pops out of the socket and the wheel flops over . Embarrassing but not catastrophic . For that to happen the socket has to have been worn for a long time and the ball loose , ultimately the wear is so great that the ball pops out .

What was the difference with the 82'models?
As per the specs in my 82' owners manual - hope to hang onto this one- there was a difference on the 82' and 82'S models.
928 - 215/60 VR15 on 7Jx15 H2 rims
OR
928 & (all) 928 S - 225/50 VR16 0n 7Jx16 H2 rims.
1. Are the H2 rims the phone Dials?
2. Were the 15's a standard on the PLAIN 928, with the 16's being the option?
The 16's were apparently standard on the 'S'.
3.If the H2 rims are phone dials, then the standard Weissach flat dish 225/50 16's was the first of the flat dish?

automatic trans early cars usually had the "comfort option" 7x15 inch rims with 215 x60 tires MORE SIDEWALL... softer ride . The flat S wheel came on the Euro S cars starting in 1980 . Phone dial wheels were standard until 1983 at which time all euro cars were S cars . USA cars were badged as S but did not get the engine just spoilers , flat S wheels , brakes . The 1982 "competiton package" basically same . Weissach was a trim package platinum wheels (goldish flat color) luggage etc.

Not sure if this helps. I have not been following this thread too close. But my 82 with the "Comp Package" had the flat seven slot wheels that were a strange gold color. And the tire size was/still is; 225/50/16.
