In testimony to Normy's comment on skill levels: I attended the US Naval Academy and have kept in contact with classmates who now fly all types of military aircrafts, including fighter jets. Those who could parallel park (less than 50%) had fast/spirited driving skills ranging from poor to mediocre, despite PLENTY of opportunity to learn and improve using my car, or their own!!!!

No reflection on Normy and many others of course. Just illustrating that a good (there shouldn't be another kind) jet fighter pilot isn't necessarily a better than average driver. But I have feeling the reverse is true. Wouldn't you agree Normy

The biggest thing i can attest to is the principle of "thinking ahead" when going from the airplane to the car. Nice thing is, in the car you can STOP.

Tony,

Even airplanes are easy to stop. The earth makes sure of that. LOL

A little Porsche content. The pictured F-15 could be considered the 928 of the fighter jet world. It had everything (in its day) but was a little heavy and very expensive. It did have redundancies (we learned the hard way with the FB-111 controls). It may still be the only airplane that can take off and gain speed in a vertical climb.

Thanks for explaining... but how in the world can you guys keep an overview in that chaos of instruments, displays, switches and controls? I'd be soo lost. But then again I don't fly these things.

Normy, now I wonder, if I should still drive to the airport... Just kidding!

simple!!

we have a very complicated checklist.

"Lights....LIT
Buttons...PUSHED
Switches..SWITCHED"

"ok, lets get this baby off the ground"
(one of my favorite Farside aviation cartoons..<picture 2 pilots sitting on top of baby&gt

Tony and Normy always enjoy giving folks a tour of the cockpit:

Many years back I worked with Eastern Airlines on 727B's riding the jumps while encouraging captains to fly a computer controller fuel management system. Believe me I can testify that like any profession, there are great drivers and not so great drivers. The 727 was a pretty plane (they fly like they look, goes the old saying) but nothing a sophisticated as today's and could be a handful for any pilot in rough conditions. Low level turbulence, poor visibility, bitching cross wind, ice with no braking and a runway that undulates like a roller coaster and some of the guys would touch down and you wouldn't even know it. Hat's off, that's aviatin'!

Now a 152 at 3,000 feet crossing ridges in nasty turbulance that keeps slamming you around like your in a Coney Park roller coaster, charts flying all over place, trying to dial in frequencies and hold a heading. Now that's really avaitin'! Well at least the cabins enclosed and there's heat.

Er . . . Tony, which button is the cigarette lighter?
