Post A/C compressor - best deal?

Since I figure the best price shifts from place to place over time, thought I'd throw the question out there. Definately a leaky compressor (1980 model year). Anyone have the latest and greatest suggestion on finding an overhauled one for a reasonable price?

Can you provide the manufacturer and model number off the compressor? I have a few ideas, depending on model. Should be a plate on the back of it. Be carefull cleaning the grease off to read the plate. The paint on the plate will come off also.

1980-1989 928s used a Nippondenso compressor a multi piston style .... they are getting rather " long in the tooth "..... the new aftermarket kits complete with new compressor , new clutch , two new main hoses and new receiver / dryer represents a good value .

Having purchased and installed the retro-fit Griffiths Kuehl Kit, I have to second Jim's recommendation. For $525 I got a new compressor (with mounting brackets that adapt to the engine block mount), high and low side hoses, filter dryer, and o-rings.
I also had a leaky front compressor seal on my '88 and a leaky hose.

John,

I was wondering when you purchased the Keuhl kit from griffiths? I got a price quote from them about 2 months ago for the kit @ $700.

Thanks

fwiw, I purchased a used unit out of a yard (which they removed from the car for me - it had not been lying around on a shelf). I vacuumed the system, gave it a charge, and was back in business for $125. That was almost 10 years ago and the system still doesn't leak a *bit*. There are quite a few cars which use the old Nip compressor & they can be had quite cheaply.

Interesting. I spoke with my wrencher and he said the older 28's that came into Bev Hills Porsche when he used to work there tended to show some leakage at the compressor and in fact he felt bad that in some cases he'd recommended replacement before he realized this was somewhat common to see. After recharging the system it seems that there isn't really any noticeable leakage from the compressor, and my original concern came from the guy who had the equipment to recharge the freon and thought that was where my troubles were. It may just have been residual from other oil leaks (main seal) I'm now beginning to think the leak is somewhere else in the system. Its holding for now but at some point I'm going to have to track down where it's leaking and get it fixed. Knock wood the only troubles I seem to have with my car are "leakage" related, like gaskets that I've already replaced etc. and money from my wallet!

Check your expansion valve with some soapy water (with pressure on the system - DOH!). It has an aluminum body that tends to deteriorate with moisture & an o-ring which can be replaced without even removing the valve, if it is leaking out of the round plug opposite the metal diaphragm thingy.

Look under the cowl on the drivers' side.

Its going to take some study to figure out where that o-ring may be but I'll take a look and see what I can find out. The word "cowl" is in the dictionary somewhere I'm betting! Thanks for the tip. I'll letcha know what I discover. I've been whining about my oil leak in another thread. Just a bit irritated about dumping cash and having recurring problems related to leaks. Is whining allowed or should I take it like getting checked in my hockey league and just skate away in pain like it never happened?

d-

;-) up in that space between the hood shocks!

Take the rubber gasket off the top lip of the firewall, and pull the plastic shield out of the way. Right in front of the driver is the expansion valve with four freon tubes going through it.

If you find bubbles coming from this unit, let me know & I'll give you more detail about the o-ring.

A good set of manuals (paper or CD format) will help reduce the frustration... check eBay.
