I just got my GTS wing and mirrors back from having them painted. I'm not going to go into detail b/c I honestly think my head would explode from the experience I've had. Suffice to say that I had a horrible experience with Bodystyles and Mr. Beach. Every facet of the customer/client relationship was painful. Mr. Beach was noncommunicative and when he was talking to me he was impolite and uncivil. I've accepted the parts only b/c I can no longer stomach the thought of more trips to his shop and more uncomfortable encounters. This is some of the worst $ I have ever spent--and it was not cheap.
<img border="0" alt="[grrrrrrr]" title="" src="graemlins/cussing.gif" />
I communicated every thought in this post (with excruiating detail) to Ms. Carol Beach (Mr. Beach's business partner) and she agreed that Bodystyles did a horrible job of managing the customer/client relationship from start to finish. She reduced my bill from $717.79 to $627.79.
I'm not sure if I've ever posted such a negative comment before, and I'm a bit uncomfortable with the idea. But I feel its justified because (i) I've already communicated it with the vendor and they have not remedied my displeasure; and (ii) I am performing a service to fellow Bay Area listers.
I'll let you know what I decide to do with the wing. While the mirrors are, IMO, barely acceptable, the wing sucks.

Seth,
That's really a shame that you had that kind of experience with the wing. Stuff like that kind-of sours you towards other items.
The PO of my car had the GTS wing and mirrors installed and they look beautiful, a real worthwhile addition in my opinion. Did they take an S4 wing and try to paint it or was it a GTS wing ?
Rob

Rob: It was a repro GTS wing in fiberglass.
Doug: Color is fine (I think). They seemed to have a ton of issues working with the fiberglass and there are now a few "pinholes" where they claim the seam of the fiberglass is not perfect. It happens to be on the rear edge, not on the front edge where you would never see it. Even allowing for fiberglass issues, however, the first coat of paint was a disaster.

It's strange that a body shop would have problems working with it. I have done a few things using fiberglass over the years and generally it's not that difficult, at least it shouldn't be for a professional shop. You can sand it, add filler, etc.
Good tip, NOT to use them.

Call Andy at A&S Enterprise in Newark 510-505-9519 and tell him the problems you are experiencing. I'm sure he can help.
He uses only the highest quality German made and mixed paints, and if it's a Porsche he works on it himself. Has done a great job on my rear wing and a scratched rim.

From my experience all 'glass parts need some massaging to get them up to snuff for final paint.
I'm sorry you had problems Seth, this shop's excuses are lame as they would know that they'd have to do some work on the part to get it perfect.
An example: take a look at my current avatar, that's a factory 'glass hood. While the flat black looks cool, it was painted that way to save some labor costs on the production line by not having to smooth it out for shiny paint.

Jim: Do you have a six -pack Panther Pink Challenger T/A? Those are so cool!
My perspective is that some muscle cars of that era (e.g., Boss 302/351, AAR Cuda, Challenger T/A) had matte or satin black hoods primarily to reduce glare.
Certainly for the Boss 'Stangs, it cost more for Ford to paint/stripe the hoods (and trunks) in satin black than it would have to shoot 'em body color. <img border="0" alt="[burnout]" title="" src="graemlins/burnout.gif" />

I had a 3X Black T/A back when nobody wanted them and they were really cheap to buy, then the prices went crazy and I cashed in (maybe there's hope for these 928s yet?).
Most of the old musclecars were blacked out for glare/style and they probable would have done the T/A the same anyway, but the AAR & T/A hoods were sourced out and limited production and were a bit rough - thus the black. Most you see at carshows have been "restored" to be as smooth as the rest of the body.
Plane isn't mine either.

You don't own the plane either, Jim? What do you own then? Just kidding...

Seth, I have a nephew who restores/paints cars. He painted my fiberglass wing and it is absolutely perfect. He had to fix one of the holes damaged from the PO and it all worked great.
He said he could have painted the original black one also ( which many say can't be done ) but I am very happy with the shape, weight and look of the GTS wing.
Just letting you know it can be done well.

Thanks all. I'm now trying to figure out whether I will seek recourse against the shop or not. Life is short, but I feel as though their statements that they cant fill the holes are nonsense and after looking at the parts more closely, they polished them down so much to remove the dirt/dust etc. that there are some very thin spots along with one spot where they went right through the pigment and then shot over it with clear.
I'm probably going to call them today and discuss my actions and see if they want to compromise. As an attorney who sees nasty conflicts every single day the last thing I want is one in my personal dealings. I think conflicts are emotionally and mentally draining. I've certainly given this experience more than its fair share of thought. I need to get closure that is better than just walking away from the problem $600 lighter in the wallet though.

Seth,
That is a shame. A professional body shop claiming that they can't work with 'glass? Heck, any amateur(like me) can get it right working in a dark garage with hand tools, it just takes time.
Jim V.
Another Mopar fan, huh? I am looking to pick up a 340 Duster/Demon, 70-74 RR, or 68-70 Super Bee this fall, unfortunatley I will have to give up the turbo to do it.
