weird shift change
today i changed my auto trans fluid and filter in my auto box as the gears had been selecting badly.
When i took off the sump there were little plastic like bits (only a few) in the bottom along with a small amount of sludge. After the change the drive was much better but the car would only go into fourth gear when i took my foot off the throttle. anyone got any suggestions please

The plastic pieces could be the plastic bushing for the throttle valve plunger; it has been know to brake. (Valve body).
If the plunger sticks you will have erratic or late shifts. The modulator is on the drives side middle of the trans., green in color.

Tim,
You might wish to lube your TV (kickdown, Bowden, whatever) cable.
It's origin is on the throttle linkage, it's the cable that heads down to the bellhousing and disappears.
Disconnect it from the linkage and shoot a fair amount of motorcycle cable lube down it.
I have seen several 928s of the pre '88 vintage and without exception, the plastic outside sheathing of the cable was gone, or mostly gone. The heat in the engine valley just kills it eventually.
No sheathing = corroded and sticky cable = some weird shift behaviour.
Though, if it always upshifts when you let off the throttle, that is likely not the main issue. It's probably the valve that Steve mentioned.
HTH,
Greg
